This railroad, from the Indian ocean to Victoria *\ynnza, is 584 miles long7‘)"VF'oodward & Smith, attorneys, and between the terminal points are thirty-nine stations. The line is man aged on the system of the Indian rail roads. and most of the men In the track, train and station service are East Indians. The Indian station agent is known ns a balm, and he leads a lonesome life. Slinba. for example, where the lions have been making a special study of the railroad system, lias only a station building, a water tank for the engines and a side track, this being one of the places where trains pass each other on the single track road. The traffic manager at Nairobi one morning received this astonishing tele gram from the babu at Slmba: A lion has been bothering me for three nights. He comes up on the station plat form nnd goes to sleep. Then he walks up and down, scratches on the wall and door and tries to get Into the office. Please send cartridges for a Snyder rifle by the first train for my protection. I have blank cartridges, but they are of no use against lions. This profound observation has the earmarks of sober truth. It is to be believed that the cartridges were promptly supplied, but. If so, they did not make a deep impression upon the lions, for a month later another hair raising telegram reached the traffic manager, as follows: Urgent. To Traffic Manager: A lion Is on the platform. Please in struct guard and driver (engineer) to pro ceed carefully end to make no signals In the yard. Tell the guard to advise pas sengers not to get out here and to be very careful himself when he comes Into the office. It Is not quite certain whether the babn was chiefly solicitous for the safety of the guard or whether be The bank will have a capital stock f $200,000 and, with the business ability and experience behind it, it will become one of Valdosta’s strong est financial institutions. Their Term of Office Ends Atlanta, Ga., May 3.—This month the term of office of Hon. Hoke Smith, and several other members of the board of health of the city of Atlanta, will expire, and there is a rumor going the rounds that council may not re-elect Mr. Smith because of the gubernatorial campaign. That a fight will be made on his candidacy for re-election Is certain, but wnether or not It will succeed remains to be seen. Good Report for Soldiers’ Home •For the first time since the open ing of the Confederate Soldiers’ home there was a full attendance of the trustees at the first quarterly meeting held the past week at that institution. The report of the president show ed that the home was in an excellent condition, being attributed to the ex cellent management of the superin tendent. During the past quarter, nine old soldiers were admitted, six were discharged and six died. This leaves in the home 105 old veterans.
