(From Thursday’* Daily.)
% /The police officers have begun
‘T^heir rounds gof the city making an
& • investigation to find out who have
provided themselves with the re
quired city license for doing bust'
;ness in Valdosta.-
It is said that three hundred and
s ^fifty-four licenses have been issued
^ind that something like five thous-
. * -and dollars has been paid into the
-.city treasury. It is estimated that
S* there are two hundred other people
« . and concerns in Valdosta doing bust-
V , jpess without the license.
Jg Nearly all the business houses and
'^manufacturing concerns of any im
portance have paid their license,
\ and those who have not paid are
l^r^imall concerns, fcuch as boarding
wR* ^houses, negro retaurants, hacks,
drays, boot blacks and small shops.
18 P robable that there are a num-
ijer of itenerants doing business in
• <£ the city who have not yet paid their
* license.
The police officers will keep on the
jcj look out for all of these parties and
* v they will be arranged before the re
corder and fined unless they provide
themselves with the license at once.

fountain Lion at Kinder Lou.
Judge John Chishalm and Chief of
Polxe. Young McRee, of Kinder Lou
were in the city this week and they
stated that some of the people in that
section! have recently seen a very
strange animal In the river swamps.
They say It is larger than a wild
cat, but that It is evidently of the
cat family and that it has a shaggy
head like a regular African lion,
i. > It has been seen a number of times
by different parties, and It is likely
v. that an effort will be made soon to
catch or kill' it. A good size bear is
also reported to have been seen re-
,1 cently In the swamps near Mr. T. M.
Smith’s place.

Waller Prevail is Arranged (or
His Father was up for Trial Some
Time Ago and Told the Court That
His Son was the Person who Oper
ated it—Both to Answer to Judge
8peer.
(From Thursday’s Daily.
A young white man named Walter
Prevatt of Mitchell county, was
bound over to the Federal court yes
terday in the sum of $200 for oper
ating an illicit distillery.
Prevatt was arrested by Deputy
U. S. Marshal Walter Godwin,
this city, and was arraigned before
United States Commissioner Roy E.
Powell. The main witness against
him were Deputy Collectors F. L.
Riley, C. B. Williams and Z. E. Nor
ton, who found a still on his place
and broke it up.
It is said that the still showed
^igns of having been operated a
very short, while before the officers
found it, but this fact was not the
only evidence, nor the strongest
that was against Prevatt.
His father, J. 3. Prevatt, was ar
rested some timo ago and bound
over on a similar charge. The old
man claimed at that time that while
a ftill was found on his* place it did
not belong to him, but to his son,
and that the son was the person who
had been operating the still. The
man- was bound over to answer be
fore Judge Emory Speer. The evi
dence against him seemed to be very
strong in the commitment hearing
then.
Since that time the officers have
had their eyes on the son, who was
accused by the father and the result
Is that the son will also have
answer before the same court.
Back
om 8outh'Carolina.
Mr. J. A. .Dasher, of this city, has
[ from c Tifilt -through South
looking over the melon and canta
loupe situation there. Hq found that
the crop In] South Carolina will reach
the market just about the same time
that the Georgia crop will, and this
fact will make It very necessary for
the Georgia growers to be extreme
ly careful in the matter of moving
their crops.
Heretofore thd Georgiu crop has
reached the market between tho Flor
ida and South Carolina crops and the
Georgia growers have had a practical
monopoly for the time being. Hav
ing to come In competition with the
South Carolina growers will put
them. at a considerable disadvantage
this year.
This is about what The Times said
veral weeks ago in regard to the
new crop, the statement being based
upon information that we had from
cantaloupe and melon growers.
FOR ARREST.

(From Thursday’s Daily.
Ellie Edward, alias Elite Elite,
alias Will Lewis and a few other cog
nomens, seems to have become an is
sue between the governor of Georgia
and the governor Florida, as well as
between the high sheriff of Lowndes
and one of the members of the police
force.
Ellis or Lewis is said to have been
wanted at Ocala, Fla., for an assault
upon a little white girl He came
to Georgia and was working for Mr.
TJomliuaon, near Dasher, and was
arrested under a labor contract and
for carrying concealed weapons. It
is claimed by the local police that
Police Officer Clayton made the ar
rest at the instance of Mr. Tomlin-
The negro was placed in Jail and
was convicted his tine oeing sixty
dollars. Then*it was learned that
he was wanted at Ocala and that a
reward of $250 was out for him. In
the meantime, it is said} that the
sheriff who J offered the reward Isf
out of office and that the reward has
been withdrawn, bu$ that another
reward will be paid for him.
The governor of Florida granted
a requisition for the negro but Gov
ernor Terrell did not want to honor
it until he could investigate the mat
ter of the reward, especially since it
was claimed by both the sheriff and
the policeman. It Is understood that
both parties to the dispute- have ap

Examined in the Law.
Charlie Shelton, who recently came
home from the Columbia Law school
of tiew York, was put through a very
rigid examination on Georgia law at
the court house yesterday, that being
the day fixed by tho supreme court
for the examination of applicants for
membership of the'Georgla bar. Judge
Robert Mitchell came over from
Thomasville and conducted the exam
ination. It is not known yet how
the young applicant came out, but it
Is very probable that he made a fire
showing.
Georgia’s First Cantaloupes.
Mr. T. M. Smith, of this city, has
made the first shipment of canta
loupes from Valdosta, having ship
ped forty-five crates from his place
to New York on last Tuesday. Tnis
is a good deal later than cantaloupes
were shipped last year, but the crops
appear to be very much behind what
it was then.
Old Negro Woman Dead.
An old negro woman, who had been
claiming to be a herb doctor and
was a stranger In this city, died
at th^ home of Fondro Curry, in the
southern part of the city this week.
She had been here only a few days
-when she was taken ill and was taken
In charge by Curry’s family. None of
the negroes seem to know anything
about her.
