KITTENS BORN

Back Yard Cat Picks Out a Novel Cndto
Far Bar Tine Fourfooted
The bravest mother la all the world
was discovered Id the person of s cat
with three newborn kittens la a lion’s
cafe daring s matins# performance at
tbs Grand Opera House, Philadelphia.
She was not a Maltese nor a Persian
nor an Angora, bat Jast,a plain, stray,
everyday, homeless, back yard variety
of cat that crept Into the cage of Lots
and Slcchl, two of Mies Claire Hellofs
lions, while the Jangle kings were go
ing through their performance on the
stage, and gave birth to three weak,
mewing kittens.
When Luts and Blech] were driven
Into their cage at the conclusion of
Miss Hellot’s act there ensued an argu
ment that was conducted In spitfire on
the part of the young mother and good
natured prowla from the two Hods.
Fritz Uaupt, one of Miss Hellofs
attendants, was attracted by the com
motion and called the lion tamer, wbo
bad Just bowed to the applauding au
dience. She ran to the cage, and Im
mediately a swarm of ployers crowded
round. They were all audibly wonder
ing what should be done when Miss

When she entered the cage a bag was
passed through the bars, and with the

THE FLAGEOLET.
It Haa Alirayi Been the Lore Flat#
of the Apnche Indian.
The flageolet Is of peculiar Interest
to Americans, as from time immemo
rial It has been the medium through
which tlio # Iudiun youth courted their
sweethearts at a distance when they
were so unfortunate as to be unable
to gu'n a personal audience.
The love or courting flute of the Apa
che is made of a round stick of csdar
about twenty-four inches long, split
lengthwise end hollowed to form an air
chamber. A bole Is made on each side
of this diaphragm and a shallow air
passage cut from one hole to tile other.
Al>ovc It hi cap of wood is placed for
the purpose Of covering the upper hole
and the air channel. The lip Is made
of a thin sheet of lead and the whole
bound together with ft slender thong.
In the tube part or JxxJy of the Instru
ment are placed s)x finger boles, a
condition that points unmistakably to
tlie influence of ConUct with tho white
mnu.
The flageolet, as ordinarily under
stood, may t>e described; as* a whistle
headed flute. In tho seventeenth cen
tury nu-lisb Indies often played on It
Sometimes two or three flageolet tubes
were constructed with one head for the
purpose of Introduclug hotes In
mouy. /Those woro called doable

An old English diary of 1007 contslne
this quaint reference to the double
flageolet: “To Duntbleny’s, the pipe-

and ill -o n fashion of having two pipes

The Name of Hlsslaa.
Many |>eoplc who sign themselves
Higgins have sought to prove that their
•annum* Is derived from the name
borne by St. Ilyglnus, tracing it
through the old English form “St
Ygyn." But according to an authority
their name Is reully connected with
“Ike,” short for Isaac, or» rather, with
“Hikke," the form in which “Ike" ap
peared In I.auKland'8 time. Isaacs,
Isaacson. Hicks. Higgs, Hickson and
Hlgsou would thus be different ver
sions of the same name, while Higgins
Is merely modified by the addition of
the Anglo-Norman diminutive. Anoth
er school derives Huggins, Hutchinson
and Higgins alike from Hugh, or. more
exnctly. from Hugoule, the genitive of
the Latin Hugo.
Th* Call of th* Wild.
Most of our song birds have three
notes expressive of love, alarm and
fellowship. The latter call seems to
keep them in touch with one auother.
I might |>erhaps add to this list the
•cream of distress which most birds
litter when caught by s cat or a bawk
—the voice of uncontrolled terror nnd
pniu which Is nearly the same in all
specles-^dlssonant and piercing. The
other notes nnd calls are characteristic,
but this last Is the simple screech of
common terrified nature.—John Bor-
