(Federal court building was included

to be passed at the present session

This means that Valdosta will have
a handsome public building as soon

(From Tuesday's Dally.)
A Are alarm was turned In a lit
tle after two o'clock this morning
-caused by a blaze In two negro hous
es on Magnolia street.
The policemen first discovered the
Are and went to the engine house and
reported It to the firemen, who were
asleep at the time. The alarm was
given the water works from the fire
headquarters and the firemen started
out In search of the blaze.
From the fire department It ap
peared to be In the northern part of
the city and the firemen went up Pat
terson street, In order to avoid a
bridge on Toombs street, the result
was the fighters went far beyond the
place and had to come back to It
When they arrived on .tine scene
the houses were fairly covered with
fire and the adjoining buildings were
In eminent danger. The firemen be
gan throwing water upon the burning
structure, as well as the nearby hous
es, and the blaze was soon under con
trol. '
The houses which were burned
belonged to Sir. J. B. Varn and one
was occupied by J. Hill, a furniture
repairer. He had about $100 Insur
ance.
The fire was such a large one and
the glow from It so great that people
at a distance thought that some,of
the largest buildings In the city were
on fire.
led at that place. The' government
usually takes Its time with matters
of this sort and it may be several
weeks before anything definite Is
done towards erecting the structure.
The amount appropriated means
that Valdosta will have a building In
keeping with the growth of the city.
understood -that the architect
has already drawn the plans and
that the work of construction will be
done as soon as the other prelimi
nary steps are -taken.
The amount appropriated will give
Valdosta a better building than Au
gusta has, and much better than the
one which was torn down In Macon,
but which was built only a few years
ago at a cost of something like
$175,000.
Congressman Brantley has been
untiring in his efforts for the estab
lishment of the new Federal court
with headquarters at Valdosta and
also in getting a good appropriation
In the omnibus bill for this city.
The people here appreciate his ef
forts very much and they will show
their appreciation whenever the oc
casion arrises.
