JAIL IS A
w
County Prison.
The Atlanta Preacher Goes to See
Rawlings and Talks of the Meeting.
He Gets In a Good Hot “Roast" for
Conditions as he said he Found
Them.
While la Valdosta last week Dr.
L. G. Broughton ot Atlanta went up
to the county jail to see J. G. Raw
lings and his sons, the elder Raw
lings having written him some time
ago asking him to call and pray with
him.
In the prelude to his regular sermon
in Atlanta on Sunday night after his
return home, the preacher told his
congregation of the visit, and we take
the following account of his talk from
the Atlanta Constitution:
Dr. Broughton stated that the old
man acknowledged freely and frankly
that he had paid Alf Moore to kill the
old man Carter, but that he had noth
ing to do with the death of the chil
dren, and was as surprised to hear
that they had been killed as anyone
else. '
What the father wants, however, Is
a new trial for his sons. He claims
that If they can secure a new trial
that with the new evidence already
discovered there Is little doubt but
that they will be saved from the rope.
. He claims that he alone was respon
sible for the murder of Carter and
the Carter children, and that the boys
had nothing to do with it. „ •>
“If there Is the least chanoe that
the boys are innocent, they should
have a new trial,” said Dr. Broughton

CHINAMAN AND . NEGRO FIGHT
THE VALDOSTA TIMES, SATURDAY, JUlI M,
— 1
1M06.
Jos Lee Knocked Insensible by a Four
teen-Year-Old Boy.
(From Tuesday’s Dally.)
Joe Lee, the Chinaman who runs a
little store on South Patterson street,
was hit a terrific blow over the head
by a negro boy named John Williams
yesterday and It was thought for sev
eral hours that he would die from the
effects.^ .
It appears that the Williams boy,
together with his couslus, Ernest and
Son Butles, were in Joe's place frol-
Icing and annoying him greatly. The
Chinaman put the Butler boys out
and attempted to eject Williams, when
he received the blow on the head. Lee
aod the negro scuffled over the floor
a few minutes when the boy jerked
loose and seized a thick wooden door
bar which he used with telling effect
on the Chinaman's bead. The latter
was knocked Insensible and was hast
ily taken to bis home on Lee street
lane and a physician summoned. It
was feared that his skull was crush
ed and he lingered all the attenoon
and night In a comatose condition.
The Williams boy made his escape
at the time, but was arrested by Po
liceman Hill on the streets about 1
o’clock this morning. Later In the
day the boy’s mother came to the po
liceman, claiming not to know of her
boy’s arrest, and wanted to put up
a cash bond tor his appearance at
the recorder’s court. On the advice of
the physician the officers declined to
accept the bond, as It was feared
the Chinaman’s Injuries would prove
fatal. The letters’ condition Is bet
ter this morning, however and he will
pobably recover from the blow.
