Atlanta, Ga., Aug. 30—A close frteDd of Mr. Cabanlss, In discussing bis candidacy for the offlce of sec retary of tbe state convention; said today that, while It was true that Mr. Cabnnlea was a.' candidate for the secretaryship of the state convention to be held at Macon, It was not true MERRITT NOT WORRIED. Johnson’s Claim of Being Elected Not Treated 8erlously. The friends of State School Com missioner W. B, Merritt are In no wise disconcerted over the claims of Hon. Mark Johnson, of Baldwin, that he has won the race for the offlce which Mr. Merritt now holds, says an Atlanta dispatch. Commissioner Merritt was out Of the city yeoterdgy, attending a school rally at Crawtordvflle, but his secre tary, Professor J. N. Rogers; stated there was no doubt on the face of the returns so far received that Mr. Mer ritt has been renominated by an Jpver- whelming vote, which will be shown When the offlclal voto Is tabulated and Announced . -■ While It Is known that Mr. John son carried several counties, It Is also asserted that he Is claiming a nuntner of counties which the. ofll- clal vote shows went to .Commission er Iflerrltt by over 480 majority. Some of the counties made no re port on state school commissioner while many others stated simply ■Wright and Merritt win” without giving any llgures. An Inspection of these reports, Professor Rogers says, shows that Mr. Merritt will have a large majority of the counties In the state convention. It Is generally conceded by those who have kept up with the political situation since the recent primary that Hon. Henry H. Cabanlss of Ful ton, and Mr. E. L. Martin, of Bibb, will be the secretaries of the dem» cratlc convention In Macon when it assembles next Tuesday, the 4th pros. That Mr. Cabanlss Is slated for one of these places there can be no doubt, for Hon. Hoke Smith’s official organ has stated that he will be put forward for one of the secretaryships of the state democratic convention that Is to meet In Macon, September 4th. Northern and Bolfeull let, there would be considerable con jecture as to the Anal outcome. The latter have the bulge, so to speak, as they have been campaigning for sever al months, and If the former should come out It would be due almost en tirely to the moral effect of the over whelming Smith victory. Messrs. Northern and Bolfeulllet, It Is said, are not losing any Bleep over this anticipated opposition, as both of these gentlemen, so U was stated, have already pledged to them 12, at which time two Important cases will come up for consideration. One of them Is a complaint filed by the people of Boston, Ga., of discrim ination In the matter of freight In favor of Quitman, Valdosta and Thom- asvllle. The other is the complaint made by the Georgia Marble Retail Dealers Association of excessive relght rates. The association claims that the rates give the Vermont quar ries an advantage over the Georgia granite. and Gornto places, a distance of nearly six miles, which was covered In less than two hours. The woman took refuge fat a pond on the Gornto place and When cans on a leg, psenFukiWixi^i hu j.l wi moccasin, wfileh had aiso crawled upon the log to get a little sunshine. The woman had not seen the snake but when her attention was called to ltjlihe plunged back Into the water that'was nearly up to her chin and began wading to the shore. She said the other wonlen had agreed to escape at the same time and that she had been chosed to lead the pace. She was carried back to the camps and It Is probable that she will not make another attempt soon. Superintendent Taylor says that the woman put up one of the best races the dogs have ever had, but that they had no trouble In catching her. as they got an early start after her. ] MR.
