The colored people of Valdosta
have been wrought to a high pitch
all day today over a horrible crime
that was committed against a member
of their race by another.
The victim Is the five or six-year-
old- daughter of Emma Carswell and
the offender is a negro named Will
Clark, who came here from Raliegh
N. C. The crime was committed
yesterday afternoon while the mother
was absent from her home on Hall
street. She had been washing for
Clark and he was left at the house
when she went out.
When she returned, she found the
child In a terrible condition, she hav
ing been subjected to the most brutal*
treatment. The matter was taken
up by tre nelghbcis of the* woman who
Is a stranger here, and Clark was ar
rested this morning by Chief Dampier
and.a negro hackman named Henry
l’orter. after running him
blocks. The negro was caught wedg
ed under a house where he tried to
make bis escape.
Two or three negro physicians ex
amined the child and a committee ol
negroes took up the case. . At first,
there wns talk of lynching and the
negroes swarmed in bunches over the
city and discussed the case. It seemed
that they wanted to register their con
demnation of the crime, and all crimes
of like nature. The committee final
ly adopted the following petition to
Judge Robert Mitchell and Solicitor
General Thomas, a copy being sent to
Judge Mitchell and also furnished to
the solicitor general:
“Gentlemen:—To our regret, we
have In our midst a most aggra
vated case of rape by a black brute
upon a colored child of five years.
We cannot find the language
strong enough to denounce this
horrible crime that has been per
petrated by ;a member of our
race upon the womanhood of both
races.
“We realize that the good of
this community and of all com
munities is to be conserved by the
hearty and voluntary co-operation
of the best element of both races
in stamping out this and other
crimes.
“Therefore, we pray that your
honor will call a special term of
the court and deal with this most
damnable crime."
This petition was signed by the beat
colored people of the city and was pre
sented ta Solicitor General Thomas
promised to confer with Judge
Mitchell over the phone in regard to
case.
The negroes have been wrought up
the highest pitch and they needed
a little encouragement to make
them organize a mob to deal with
le black brute who had committed
le fiendish crime.
Clark stoutly denied his guilt this
morning when accused of the crime,
though it Is said that he offered to
the mother of the child $20 if
would say nothing about it.
Higher Than Expected.
The Tall Timber is Throbbing with

Not so Heavy aa Previous Week.
(From Tuesday’s Daily.)
Surpassing the expectations of

sufficiently high to make the heart
of the producer out in the .“tall tim

vannah dispatch.
The most notable feature in the
week which ended yesterday was the
total absence of manipulation. The
market advanced 2 cents during the
w eek and the upward movement was
entirely due to the demand which,
from both domestic and foreign
sources, proved excellent. Indeed
there was no let up in the demand,
and as usual the total receipts were
barely sufficient to cover require
ments of the trade.
The market opened last Monday firm
at 59% and 60c, and closed firm at
the outside value. Both opening and
close on the day following was at COc.
On Wednesday the market opened
firm at 60 cents with a gain of 3-9c to
its credit *.t the flnad call. The onen-
Ing Thursday was firm at 60*40, and
at the last call the market advanced

the previous day’s closing values on
the inside of 61c, the outside quota
tion, and last prices on that day were
advanced %c., with the previous out
side, with everything taken at board
values, 6}£c. Through Saturday the
article ruled firm at 61%c., and the
market was swept of all offering with

Receipts, while possibly not so
heavy as the previous week, were yet
excellent and the outward movement

T AMERICAN QUEEN
We anticipate the demand and never sell any green beer. Throughout the
year we carry the following year’s supply, aging it for months in advance,
so that it is always thoroughly ripe, mellow and healthful at the time of sale,
As another safeguard against biliousness, the water used is from our own
artesian wells, and is strongly impregnated with chloride of sodium. This
makes the addition of salt unnecessary in AMERICAN QUEEN BEER.
You can safely keep this brand in your home, and should call for it wherever you drink.
