Russians Tell Him to leave or he
He had Made Hlmaelf Offensive to
the Powers that be In Czar's Do-

Waites has Been Identified—Gov
ernor Offers Reward for Another.
Atlanta, Aug. 28—It has lust been
learned that Edward K. Vanwinkle,
a prominent young Atlanta business
man has been deported from Russia.
He Is now at sea on his way hbme,
bavins sailed from England, to which
country he went after haring been
warned to letve Baku, Russia. He went
to the czar's realm last June to In
stall seme machinery In the oil wells
about Baku.
Not long ago, It seems, the Russian
government sent him an order through
the British consul to the effect that
if he did not leave Baku wlthtn It
hours after receiving the notice the
government would not be responsible
for hie death. He took the hint
and left.
Just what caused the order of de
portation Is not known. Mr. Van Win
kle Is a member of the Van Wlnkl#
Machine Company, of Atlanta, and If
one of the best known young men In
the Southern technical world,
Negro Assailant Identified.
Will Ltndsman, a negro, was yes
terday Identified by Miss Mittle
Waites as the negro who attempted
to assault her at her home near
Adamsvllle Friday afternoon. The
negro was captured by Jim Casey,
deputy warden of the convict camp
at the Chattahoochee Brick company,
and put in jail.
Miss Waites was notified that a
negro charged with attempting an at
tack on her was In the Tower, and,
accompanied by her father, L. C.
Waites, came to town to see If he
was really the right one. Llndsman
was lined up with eleven other pris
oners and the young woman, without
a moment's hesitation, pointed him
out.
Miss Waites' father then went to
the court ol Justice Orr and swore I
out a warrant charging tne negro
with attempted assault upon his
daughter. Mtss Waites was at a
spring Fiiday when the negro attack
ed her. She screamed and he was
frightened away.
Governor Terrell has authorized a
reward of $200 for the negro assail
ant of Mrs. Richard Hambree, who
was attacked several weeks ago at
her home near Battle Hill. Mrs. Ham*
bree "wrote to the govenfe begging
him to offer a reward so as to stim
ulate the search for the negro.
PISTOL AND AXE FIGHT.
Two Well Known Men are Dying at
Macon at Result
Macon, Aug. 28—As the result of
a free-for-all fight near the Southern
depot here this afternoon, two well-
know Macon men are dying at the city
hospital and two men and four wo
men are under arrest at the City bar
racks .pending Investigation.
George Curtis, a carpenter, bad bis
skull crushed In three places by blows
from an axe.
Joe Newsone, a popular young man
had two bullets sent through his right
and left breasts. The bullets pene
trated both lungs.- With both these
men, death Is a question of a few
hours.
The white women and Curtis became
engaged m a quarrel. Newsome heard
the quarrel and rushed to the scene
The two men met at the doorway.
John Curtis, .brothefTfraedrferVp-
peared. He drew a pistol. Newsome
secured an axe and went for George
Curtis, crushing hin skull with three
terrible blowc. John Curtis opened
fire, bitting Newsome twice, the third
bullet accidentally penetrating the
head of his prostrate brother. John
Curtis escaped.

Coaches Derailed by a Split Switch

St. Poul Aug. 28—Delayed for «ev
eral hours but uninjured by the wreck
of a train on which he was coming
east from a visit to his father’s old
ranch at Medora, N. D., Kermlt
Roosevelt and hie friend John Heard
reached St. Paul this afternoon. The
boys rode about St. Paul In an auto
mobile and then continued their east
ward Journey.
At Berea a split switch derailed
five cosohes of the train, but none of
the passengers were Injured, although
young Roosevelt who occupied a com
partment In a sleeping car, and sev
eral other persons were somewhat
shaken up.

Ocean Cfrore, Aug. 28—Mrs. Jesse
James, widow of the bandit, testified
this morning at tne annual love feast
of the camp meeting, held In the
auditorium at 9 o'clock. Nearly 12,-
000 happy .shouting Methodists, In
cluding 300 ministers, took part in the
services, which continued for ninety
minutes. In that time more than
400 persons gave testimony. Bishop
James N. Fitzgerald of St. Louts
presided. *
The next improvement that Valdos
ta should take up Is pved sidewalks.
It will do very well for the matter
to go over this yJfx, but the present
administration wd lid do good work
by Inaugurating a liberal program of
sidewalk paving.
Hackman Flukes In Jail.
Hackman Flukas, who was released
from jail the other day, has been nr-
' rested again and It now in a cell await-
| lag an Investigation. He Is charged
.assisting burglars la their work. The
|ne£ro who robbed Mr. John Coffee's
: residence end who later escaped from
l jail at Tlfton, accused Flukas, but
, when he escaped Flukas was released
as there was no other evidence against
him.
Since that time, other evidence has
been secured against Flukas and yes
terday Sheriff Passmore placed him
under arrest again.

Savannah petit juries do not believe
In convicting people for violations of
the Sunday law. They acquitted three
defendants of that charge yesterday.
Paul Conlda wae the most prominent.
He keeps a large Ice cream and soda
water parlor. His attorney contend
ed that In this age Ice cream on a
summer Sunday It a necessity. The
Jury seemed to accept this view of
the case too, and Paul was acquitted
for the first time on the charge of
selling on Sunday.
Bridge to be Let.
Contractors are hereby notified that
the contract for a new steel bridge,
to be built acrose the Alapaha river
near mayday, Ga., will be let to the
lowest and beet bidder on Monday,
September 8rd, 1906. The bridge will
M entirely of steel except the floor
ing.
Sealed contracts will be received
by the board of county commissioners
of Echols county from now until the
day of the letting. Plans and specifi
cations can he seen In the office of
the board of county commissioners at
