Atlanta. The recent enactment of a
city ordinance carrying the terms of
the state law for the separation of
the races has stirred up the negroes
in a remarkable manner. Meetings
are frequently held nt which the
white people are denounced in in
flammatory terms. Negro preachers
and bad negroes seem to have unit

the negroes against the whites. The
boycott against the street cars by
the negroes Is still on and negroes
who would patronize the cars are

the feeling. The authorities aro
straining every nerve to keep In

One In authority.
Thousands of groundless rumors
have been flying over the city and
have caused excitement among the
women and children. Many of the
women have been on the verge of ner

they could do to pacify them. Hun

and those coming from seemingly
reliable sources, have, upon investi
gation, turned out to be nothing more
than Idle gossip magnified a thous

The papers here have all put extra
men on their local staffs because of
the great amount of work to be ac
complished, and as soon as a report
of a disturbance comes to the office
a man Is dispatched to the scene to

Russell has received a large number
of letters and telegrams from friends
in all parts of the state, urging him
Jo get into the race and promising
their support. He has finally decid
ed to do so, even though, as he states,
he will have no time in which to make
a canvass of the state.
