for a complete pardon for the Raw
lings boys. Several articles on the
subject last week were followed up
by a double-column editorial on Sun
day. The Journal wants Governor
Terrell and the pres-nt pardon board
to Issue this pardon, but we want
to advise the governor to beware of
enemies when they come bringing
advice. If the Journal wants to
defy the bes* sentiment among saint
and sinners In South Georgia, let it
Induce Mr. Hoke Smith, when he be
comes governor to Issue this pardon.
The Journal contends that the sta*e
penitentiary, or confinement there, is
a “living death" and that It would
he better for the Rawlings boys to
have been hanged than subjected to
such a penalty. If that Is so ,why
does not the Journal advocate hang
ing as the proper penalty for chicken
stealing, instead of sending the of
fender to the penl’entlary? If the
penitentiary Is too severe a place for
mid night assassins, why has the
Journal been supinely lying on ' Its
hack all of these years and allowing
criminals of far less degree sent to
that place? Does It argue that there
was not enough evidence to convict
these boys? Has not the courts, from
the superior to the United S*ates su
preme court been over the ground
carefully and concurred In what was
done? Has the Journal forgotten
the crime that was committed, with
all of Its diabolical details?
The people In the rural districts
are dependent entirely upon a rigid
nforcement of the laws against as
sassins, as well as burglars .for their
protection. Only last week, Governor
Terrell offered the largest reward ever
offered In Georgia for the arrest of an
who fired Into the home of
a citizen of Chlpley and killed him
A little while ago a Colquitt citizen
was shot down as he sat talking with
his wife In the security of hla home.
Such crimes have all of tho elements
of malice, as well as cowardice. In
them and the law offers no punish
ment too severe for the perpetrators
of such deeds. And yet, the Atlan
ta Journal advoctaes the pardon of
three men convicted of shooting down
innocent children In their own yard,
and of following up the shotH with an
attempt to butcher a whole family!
And tho Journal prates about mercy
—“like tho gentle dews of heaven"
—the mercy which blesses the giver
and receiver alike. We grant that
r.ifrcy Is a beautiful quality, but where
wag iMercy when the two little Car-
children were assassinated?
Where was it when the plot for whole- unon the follow!
Uniform Divorce Law.
That Imposing congress of eminent
ecclesiastics and savlants at Philadel
phia met to dlpcuss a'.unlforra divorce-
law for the United Spates to be en
acted by congress, aftey four days of
"pdlnful” deliberation Anally agreed
be
during the six or eight hours, when
uccouling to the evidence, the assas
sins were trying to get a shot at
other children of the Carter house
hold?
Hie attitude of the Atlanta Journal
in the light of the facts. In tho case
Is devilish in tho extreme. If the
Journal makeg more such breaks,
thousands of poople In this sec Mo a
will ft lleve that a mad man Is at
Its throttle.

A Bit of Sound Theology.
Here la a bit of theology from the
Russell Record: Two Kansas farmers
who had “laid by’’ their corn were
standing In front of tho livery barn
disputing over their respective church-
. Finally one called a neighbor who
was passing and asked his opinion
as to which was the only church In
which to be saved: “Well,” said he,
“my son and I have hauled wheat to
the same mill for nigh onto twenty
years. Now there are two roads that
lead from our place to the mill—one's
tho valley road, t’other takes us over
the hill. And never yet, friends, has
tho miller asked me which road I took
but he always asks: ‘Is your wheat
good?’" --

The Cause of 8ickness.
Kansas City physician has dis

the Hopkins Journal adds that low’-

corsets produces heart disease and
shortness of breath, long skirts gather
up gernis of all Infectious diseases,
thin soles produce consumption, and
tight shoes cause the toes to grow to
gether, and looking at bright millinery
causes sore eyes. Women should be
careful about these things.
