Among the important bills Introduc
ed in the house on the first day af
ter the four days’ vacation were the
following:
A bill to remove the experiment
station from Griffin to Athens, which
was submitted by ,Mr. Price of Oco
nee; a bill to increase the compensa
tion of members of the general as
sembly to $250 per term, the sessions
to be extended beyond fifty day3 by
a vote of both houses when it is nec-
ary to dispose of business. The
measure provides that the president
of the senate and the speaker of the
house shall each receive $400 per
by
of business. There are many mat-
of importance scheduled for ac-
jj tion, and the members feel that the
) sooner the bills are considered the
better.
There was a good deal of specula
tion as i to the possible personnel of
various committees of the two
branches of the legislature, but when
the appointments were read there
was general satisfaction with the
choice ofpresident and speaker. Since
the present session began a great
number of bills have been introduced,
state supreme court. The members
of the senate were recipients of
a big waiter of pinks, the gift of Ben
jamin Blackburn, former secretary ot
Governor Terrell.
In the house Mr. Alexander, of De-
Kalb asked unanimous consent to
have house bill No. 88 read a second
time. The bill provides for chang
ing the method of arbitrating tax val
ues returnable to the comptroller-
genera] to appoint any citizen on the
board of arbitration. Mr. Hall

The different committees have
started to work at once. The tem
perance committee of the senate,
to hear the measure read. Then a
resolution by Mr. Alexander request
ing the committee on ways and means
to report, if possible, on bill No. 88*

During the session of the senate
yesterday another bill touchlng on
the prohibition question was
duced. The measure- Is by Senator
Wald?n and is de igned to “prohibit
any railroad, express company or
common carrier from carrying from
any county In this state any spirit-
ous, malt or Intoxicating liquors into
any dry county.” Even If the prohi
bition bill should pass, this measure
by Mr. Walden would supplement the
general law as It would prevent the
shipping Into the state of Intoxicating
beverages.
One of the arguments most fre
quently brought to bear against a
state prohibition measure is that “it
won’t prohibit,” meaning that a law
which says no oue shall manufac
ture or sell spirituous or malt liquors
Vyjwithin the confines of the state, will
IT
\jiot prevent the shipping In of the stuff
to all who may order it from dealers
In other states. A law which would
prohibit railroads from bringing whis
key into Georgia would really make
the prohibition law prohibitory.
Senator Deen has introduced a bill
to prevent railroads and street car
companies in Georgia from granting
free passes to passengers or for
