Valdosta, Ga., Nov. 28th, 1907.
, We, the grand Jurors chosen Bid
sworn for the November Term, 1907,
Lowndes Superior court, bog leave
to make the following report:
Publle Buildings.
We find aa to the courthouse, that
little or no attention baa been paid to
the recommendation of the grand
Jury at the May term of court, rela-
, tire to keeping the same, In a cleanly
condition. The rule* promulgated by
the county commissioners, forbidding
spitting on the floors and walls, are
apparently grossly Ignored. We find
that the toilet rooms in the base-
ments are in bad oondltlon and emit
very offensive odors, but that the
County Commlsstners are now engag
ed In making repairs aqd changes
that we think will remedy, this
trouble. We find also an accumula
tion of trash and rubbish In the base
ment of the court house, which la
very unsightly and productive of

and also that the office of Ex-Officio
Justice of the Peace in the Clyatt-

. Pension List
We find this list to be In good shape
end correctly kept so far as we were
able to determine npw. There ap
pears on the same the names of 76
old soldiers and 22 widows of vet
enM. au of whom are duly qualified
to receive pensions. We find the list
to be eorrectly kept as to deaths sad
removals from the county.
County Public Schools
The Information at our hands Indi
cates that the public scoots of the
county are la splendid condition, with
probably' a more efficient oorpa of
teachers'than ever before. In tbe
absence of a detailed statement we
are unable to make an extensive re
port
Roada and Bridget.
We find these to be in the best
condition possible with the .small
force now at work on them. Wa find
that the efficient superintendent Z.
H. Taylor, has built with the road
gang this year, three and ono-qqartcr
miles of clay roads, in addition
working the wads to every one of
the nine districts of the county.
There ere about twelve hundred
miles of public roada to the county,
and the county to to be coogrstulstd
on having a man to Charge of the
work v$io can accomplish so much
with so small force. There has been
built during the year, 9,250 lineal
feet of bridges, at a cost of $3,989.39.
An estimate based on carefully com
puted data, shows that this work
would have cost 60 per oent more
If done with hired or free labor.
Therefore we recommend that at the
kept to a more tidy condition and
tJhat do wares or advertisements be
Isplayed thereon. That tbe grass
i be protected and all seats re-
ved from the lawn.
Jail.
1 We find this building to be kept
reasonably good condition, exoopt
: old portion of the building which _
been condemned by previous
F Juries. The accommodations for the
prisoners are, so tor as we can deter-
\ mine, aa good as can possibly be af
forded with the present structure.-
County Chain Gang.
We find that all the)live stock,
[..-wagons, tools, etc., are in good con-
i dltlon and are well looked alter and
' cared for by the Superintendent to
the Chain gang wo find one white fe-
male, one colored female and twenty
male prisoners, all of whom appear
to be^ In good physical condition
Th^y are properly fed and eolthed.
’ Poor Farm.
We find the main building In fair
ly good condition , but the outbuild
ings and fences are very-dilapidated.
We find that there are only two ln-
matesr»ne white male and one white
female, both of whom appear to be

C. M. DeLong, Superintendent of the
Eagle’s Club, is Indicted Under two
Counts—The Case Is Regarded as
a Teat Cass to Determine Lew as
to 8oclal Clubs.
(From Wednesday’s Dally)
The grand Jury, as Its last ac$s,
returned a true bill which may In
volve a question of considerable In
terest throughout the state. The In
dictment was against C. M. DeLong.
the steward of tha Eagle’s Club,
which Is the largest social olub to
this section. The Indictment charges
him with keeping fopon a tippling
house, on Sunday. - i , '
It seems that this club has a lock-
1 system, the lookers containing
liquors belonging to the. members.
It Is also said, that the member* vis
it the olub with their friends to drink
these liquors. It to eontgtfed that
DeLong acts aa superintend sot, keeps
the lookers supplied and sets as keep
er of tha place. It Is not contended
that liquors era always sold, but. that
the tact that they are kept thsrs to
he drunk, and members gather than
and drink and toilte their friends
there, makes the place a tippling
house end places It nnder the law,
which says a tippling house shall not
be opened on Sunday.
If these points hold good, the pay
ment of the locker tax. after January
1st next may not give elubs of this
kind the right to open on Sunday. It
Is oontended by the state’s attorney
that the law relative to tippling
houses Is to prevent euoh gatherings
and practices on the Sabbath, nod
