Captain Wright has just returned
roni Columbia, S. C„ and It was In
the state a yiuni in that city that the
counterfeiter's den was unearthed.
Reports from South Carolina 9f the
abundance of excellent counterfeit
half dollars caused Captain Wright
to vHit Columbia and he soon traced
the manufacturer of the money to
the state mad house. He Anally as
certained that the bad money was
Sniade by Willis Driggers, an insane
Inmate of the asylum and he had R.
M. Kennedy and C. W. Brown, two
guards at the aslyum held under
bond on a charge of passing the
money. Although not sane enough
to be at large. Captain Wright says
Driggers is sane enough to make
some of the best counterfeit half
dollars he has ever seen.
Wants More Fire Apparatus.
On the recommendation ot Chief
Cummings of the Atlanta fire depart
ment, a resolution appropriating
$25,000 for the purchase of new Are
apparatus for the department was In
troduced at. the meeting of council
yesterday afternoon and referred to
the Anance committee. The purchase
includes 10,000 feet of hose; two
new Are englnos; ten heaters and
one aerial truck. This recommenda
tion comes as a result of the disas
trous Are which swept Atlanta last
Friday. In the future the depr
will not depend on the
pressure but will have engines
enough to get the proper pressure
needed.
Clearing Away the Ruins.
A small army of men Is now at
work clearing away the ruins of the
great Atlanta Are and within a short
time all evidence of the disaster
will have been removed. The Arst
Insurance claim paid as a result of
the Are came yesterday when Sam
M. Inman, tbe heaviest loser, receiv
ed $10,000 from one insurance com
pany. It Is believed that the other
losses will be rapidly adjusted. As
soon as this is done, the work of
rebuilding tbe burned section will i
commence nnd bigger and better
buildings will be erected.
A Mad Dog Epidemic.
