arriving there joined tho Salvation

8avannah to Have Concerts.
Savannah will probably have band
concerts in the Park Extension two
or three evenings each week during
the summer. Col. Patterson at Fort
Screven has about concluded arrange
ments for bringing the hand up to
the city for that purpose.
Military Going to Encampment.
The Savannah military companies
are getting ready for their trip to
the national enenmpment nt Chick-
•manga next month. The Georgia
Hussars began drilling Inst night for
this event The companies In the
1st regiment have been nt work for
the past two weeks. The Savannah
Volunteer Guards will not go as they
have already done thetr tour of duty
at Fort* Screven.
GROVER CLEVELAND
Princeton. N. J., June 24,—Ex-prcsident Grover Cleveland
is dead.
While Mr. Cleveland has been seriously ill from time to
time, the announcement of his death came like a thunder bolt to
those who have been watching his illness.
The former President died in his bed in the second-story
front room of his home, at his bedside being Mrs. Cleveland
and the three physicians. The only other persons in the house
at the time were a number of .servants.

sponse to a hasty summons yesterday, and as was the custom
when visiting Princeton, remained ali night.
While Mrs. Cleveland did not want to alarm their friends by
telling them that her husband was quite ill, and, in fact, lead
them to believe that he was no worn . it became known that be

ham county delegation, although no
great fight was made for it when we
saw the tenor of the delegations from
other sections of the state. We

Still Searching for Alvarez.
The authorities are still searching
for Joseph Alvarez, a young man em
ployed as teller of the Savannah Gas
Company. He Is said to be short In
hla accounts something like $3,000 or
$5,000. Mr. John W. Golden, the vice
president nnd manager of the com
pany, was much distressed because
of the shortage as he liked young
Alvarez very much. He had taken
him into the office as an office boy
and had seen him steadily promoted
to an office and position of trust. It
Is expected the young man will be
Caught and prosecuted by the bond
ing company which will have to make
the shortage good.
» Wright Sues Negro Paper.

tion, according to rumor, has just
entered suit against the three pro
prietors of the Savannah Tribune, the
colored newspaper In Savannah for
libel. He alleges that he wag libel
led when the newspaper accused him
of using a forged proxy at the .Ma
con Republican convention. One of
the owners of the paper who la sued
s J. H. Deveaux, the colored collector
of the port. The others aro C. C.
Deveaux, a mall carrier and brother
of J. H.. and Sol C. Johnson, the edi
tor of the paper.

heat. When Doctors Bryant anil Lockwood visited him this
morning they found him indisposed, ns one of them termed it,
and Dr. Carnochan, of Princeton, was asked to step over to the
house.
This was before 8 o'clock. Shortly after Mr. Cleveland
seemed to fail. The physicians recognized the symptoms and
immediately arrangements were made to combat the attack.
With every resource at hand they worked over him, but he ‘in-
ally lapsed into unconsciousness and do d it 8:40.
Mrs. Cleveland is prostrated but her physicians have mat
ters well in hand.
There was consider.,ble discussion last night, occasioned by
ttye visit of Dr. Bryant, the Cleveland fa■■ ily physician, to the
Cleveland home, but Mrs. Cleveland, n discussing this with
friends later, said there was no occasion for alarm, and that
Mr. Cleveland was getting along niee'v This re assurance un
prepared his friends for the news of his death.
Mrs. Cleveland was at home when her distinguished husband

with pulmonary thrombosis and oedema, were immediate causes
of his death ”
Mr Cleveland's serious condition dates back some weeks.
Recently he had been at Lakewood, N J., where constant re
ports of improvement in his condition were issued. He remain
ed at I.akewood several weeks anil about a month ago was suf
ficiently recovered to be taken to his lv me at Princeton in an
automobile.
It is announced that the funeral of Mr. Cleveland will be
held on Friday and that it will he strict I v private.
