The Blare of Brass Bands, Huzzas of
Thousands and the Roar of Can

City Expected a Large Crowd of
People, and had Them .
. .Cincinnati, O., July 28.—Amid the
blare of brass bands, the stirring
■trains of martial music and the huz-
sas of entnusiastlc crowds, Judge Wil
liam H. Taft was formally notified
today of his nomination for the Pres
idency by the Republican national
convention which was held In Chica
go last month. The rally, In point of
numbers and enthusiasm far outrank
ed any demonstration o fllke char
acter ever held in Cincinnati. The
•vent waa In every detail a most glor
ious and gratifying success.
At an early hour salutes of cannons
were fired fsnm the fotir hill tor
the city, which brought the whole
population to a condition of wakeful
ness. All morning great crowds of
people poured Into the city from thi
aiirburban towns on both aid'3 Of th<
Ohio river while every train brought
In large numbers from every city of
consequence In Ohio and the neigh
boring states
..Cincinnati expected a big crowd and
had prepared to orftertaln. The en
tire business portion of the city was
handsomely decorated with flags, ban
ners and bunting, and preaented a
gala appearance. With the arrival
of every train delegations headed by
bands poured Into the streets and
were shown to the headquarters at
the Hotel Slnotn by members of the
active reception committee. Parti
cular attention was paid to the wel
come of the membera of the notifies-
tips committee, the membera of which
represented every state and territory.
■QWWOPWPlctou* feature of the
demonstration was the prevalence of
Taft and 8h*rman badges. Nearly ev
ery one of the tena of thousands of
people seen about the streets wore
aoore Insignia of his devotion to the
Republican cause. They were every
where.
Large parties arrtvrd during the
forenoon from Pittsburg. Louisville
and Indianapolis. Columbus sent
down a delegation numbering more
than 1.000 enthusiasts, headed by the
famous Buckeye Republican Club.
Cleveland. Toledo. Youngstown. Day-
ton and Canton were much In evi
dence. Ilrbana. Lancaster, Massillon.
Ironton and Sandusky were In evi
dence. and Hamilton and other near
by cities and towns almost depopulat
ed themselves. Some of the delega
tions contained large numbers of
negroes, whose presence was hailed
with ioy by the rally managers as
proof of the falsity of the statements
that the negro race was dissatisfied
with the Republican ticket.
The event of the morning was a
flag raising on th« lawn of the resi
dence of Charles P. Taft o n PI*®
atreet. which was accompanied by
sipproprtate ceremonies. The crowds
that surged abaut the Taft home and
overran the lawns and steps threat

Prior to the notification ceremonies,
Jndge Taft gave out the following
■statement ■ ,
“The formal and political apeech
of acceptance to the representatives
of the state and territories of the
Union. offers no opportunity to Mrs
Taft and m/self to express the feel
ing of gratitude that swells our
heart* at this cordial and enthusiastic
reception of our friends, fellow-cltl-
mens and neighbors In Cincinnati,
without regard to party.

The Town is More Than on Its Feet
After the Recent Panic—A Pecu
liar Situation In Thia City Unlike
That Which Confronted Other
Towns in Georgia .
(From Tueaday’s Dally.)
“Hail you stopped to consider toe
fact that Valdosta got on her feet
quicker than any town In Georgia af
ter the recent panic?" asked one of
the oMest and best known financiers
In Valdosta today.
"Had you stopped to consider again
that Valdosta rallied from the tempo
rary effects of the prohibition move
ment quicker than any of the cities
similarly situated? People may talk
about wiping out an industry as great
as the liquor business was In this
city .but It was qu!*e a serious prop
osition from a business view-point. It
meant the taking of a very InVge
amount of money out of business. It
meant the closing up of ten or a dozen
business houses and forcing out of
employment n large number of men
employed by these houses. It meant
the cutting off of big revenues to the
city and doing away with a line of
business which, all admit, brought
money and trade to the town.
"Now, all of this occurred at the
beginning of the panic last year—Just
about a year ago this week. There
was hound to be a period of depres
sion for swhlle, no matter how flush
times were In general. Of course, the
panic was harder to bear on accouot
of the blow which had already fallen
on the city.
"‘But the town has rallied from It
like the proud bird wo read about.
The banks here were among the last
to Issue the clearing house certifi
cates and they were among the first
to call them In. The crops In this
Immediate section foretell a good
trade this fall. Our out-of-town trade
Is beginning to pick up every day
The bank deposits are getting larger.
The streets mve more crowded with
people than they usually are at thli
season—for you must remember that
this Is the dullest season of the year.
“Take another straw as Indicating
that Valdosta has fully recovered
from the effects of the hard times.
There Is more talk about building
here than has been known before In
two or three years. There are more
plans being made . There are more
pople enquiring for homes In Valdos
ta than have been heard of In a long
time.
T have been watehnlg things pret
ty cloeely In Valdosta for many
years," he said, "and I tell you that
the outlook la bright. This new road,
making Valdosta Its headquarters and
operating Its trains In both directions
from this city, Is going to bring many
people and an Immense volume of
business to the city.
"I am glad The Times Is taking an
optlmlst'e view of conditions. The
paper has always done that. I re
member a number of times when It
‘■as making an almost single-handed
fight, and It won. Now. It Is hacked
up In Its work by every cltlarn, and
a great triumph for the town will be
the result."
