THEY LAID A LASH
Th* Elder Glddens Spent Lett Night
County Jell, While the ton
eeted Thlo Morning—Both
Pieced Under Bondi of *500 Each
and Released. '
(Prom Frlday'e Dally.)
Ely Glddens, a well known farmer
In the upper part of the county, was
arrested yesterday on a charge of as
sault ana oattery, the warrant for
bis arrest having been sworn out by
Ed Godwin, a young man In the same
neighborhood.
This morning Prank Glddens, a son
of Ely, came to the city and Ihe was
dlso placed under' arrest. Sheriff
Passmore arrested one of the men
and Deputy Ellis arrested the other.
Their bonds were fixed at $500 each,
there being two counts against the
men. One was to answer for the as-
•ault and the o’her was to keep the
peace.
What one Little Seed Did.
(From Friday’s Dally.)
Of course, it Is not possible to keep
up with all of the big things that ar
grown on the soil around Valdosta,
but once In a while a case of more
than ordinary Interest comes up. Such
a case Is one reported by Dr.
Parrish. La f e In the fall last year,
he found a watermelon seed In a
crack around his premises. “I’ll keep
that seed and plant it,” he said, “and
see what It will do.”
Along about melon planting time,
he got out the seed and planted it in 1
his gaw|en. A huge vine grew up
and spread over a large 'area of
gound. During the season, he gath
ered from the vine eighteen fully ripe
watermelons, weighing altogether 440
pounds. The vine also produced' a
lot of melon8 that were given to the
stock or rptted in the field.
The melon grew on ordinary, un*
cultivated land. Dr. Parrish Is afraid
to say what would have been the re
sult If it had been planted upon some
of his best ground.

The case Is rather an unusual one
and Is also quite sensational. Ed
Godwin and young Glddens married
sisters, daughters of the late Sam
Barker. Godwin and his wife separ
ated and It Is said that there has not
been the best of feeling between him
and Glddens since then. Recently
Ely Glddens heard that Godwin had
been making a remark about his
daughter that was derogatory to
His son also heard of the remark and
the father and son decided to avenge
the wrong done the young lady. If It
could be construed as a wrong.
The report says that the two men
drove to Godwin's home, or to the
home of his parents, where he was
residing, and called him out. They
asked him to take a ride with them,
everything being apparently friendly.
They drove some distance, so the
atory goes, and Godwin soon learned
from the tenor of the conversation
that things were not as peaceable as
they seemed. He started to. jump

Arriving near the Harrell old mill
place, about two and a half miles
away, they all dismounted and God
win was prepared for the thrashing
which was administered upon him. by
the elder Glddens. A buggy whip was
used, and Godwin claims that it was
worn to a frazzle and then the staff
was used upon him. The elder Gld
dens did the whipping while the
younger rnan stood by and dared God
win to resent it or resist.
No pistol or other weapon was ex
hibited, but Godwin believes his as
sailants were armed. He claims that
great whelps were made upon his
body by the beating that was given
him. He also claimed that he felt
Insecure and swore out a peace war
rant, too. He declares that he did
not make the remark attributed to
him. It is said that he admitted that
the had repeated what he heard and
what was common talk, but had not
"talked” It.
It Is unders'oed that the two Gld
dens’ were trying to amicably adjust
the matter today and not have It go
In the courts. They made the bond
of $500 required of them and 'hen, so
It Is said, set about to have the mat
ter quashed.
Just what will be done with the
case remains to be seen. It is one of
the most yv.isua! cas«s that has come
up here lately.
ey was In It, the amount being about
$3.75. He then took two or three pock
et knives and some other small things
and skipped out. The robbery prob
ably occurred while the police officers
were at the trains or in the other
part of the city.
The manner In which the entrance
was effected, as well as the articles
that were stolen, shows pretty con
clusively that the burglar was as fa
miliar with the surroundings.

tragic circumstances, resulted In

Young Folsom's body was exhumed
and the head was sawed open to be

Wilson and Qullllan made the

blow upon the head from a heavy
piece of timber. The physicians at

death and were satisfied that the.

was made so that there could be no
possible legal doubt of It.
The most Important witness before
the coroner was "Dock” Touchtone,
who saw the trouble and with whom
young Folsom rode part of the way
home. He said he saw the 'young
men quarreling at the mill, but the
mill was making so much noise that
he could not tell what they said. Fol

He was Wanted at Vienna.
Deputy Ellis went out to Kinder
Lou with Deputy Butler, of Vienna,
to arrest a negro named Henry Will
Hams, who was wanted at Vienna for
cheating and swindling and other
charges. When the negro was found
he was unloading hay with a pitch-
fork and he became somewhat stub
born. He refused to consider himself
under arrest and he also refused to
put down the pitchfork.
After some little delay, during
which the negro assumed an air of
semi-defiance, the ■ two officers closed
In on him and took him In charge.
4iixn, holding him -down,
meantime, one of the older Powe
boys took the knife from Folsom
hand. A few minutes later he
Folsom his knife.
Folsom later got* on his wa/on and
went with him to the forks of* the
road. He had little to say, but ap
peared to be suffering and wast very
nervous, his feet and legs constantly
moving. He did not think at the time
that Folsom was so badly hurt.
There was some other evidence, but
Touchtone’s was regarded as ; the
most important. Upon It and the ev
idence of the physicians the ve]
of the Jury was based. What etltf
the defendant will put up who# the
case comes to trial remains to he
seen.
One of the defendant’s brothers
Islted him at the Jail yesterday.
Cotton Opens In a Hurry.
Mr. H. Y. Tillman said this morn
ing that he had never seen cotton
open quite as fast as it has at the
present Mmo, at this season of the
year. His field is almost white and
picking l.as begun in earnest. He
says that he has never seen the sta
ple so thick In the middle of Septem-
v ber as It Is at present
He says also that the excessively
hot, weather Is having a very damag-
Ing 'effect upon the staple throughout
this section. He says the stalks are
wilting and drying up and that the
first picking will be nearly all that
will be gotten. Several weeks ago
a great yield was promised, but the
weather renditions have cut the crop
to pieces during the past week or
two.
If the present weather continues
much longer the result will, be Just
that much worse. It Is expected that
there will be plenty of cotton on the
market next week.
Chicken Swallowed a Snake.
The Times is Just a little "jublcus”
about printing snake stories, except
where they are vouched for hy well
known people. Today Superinten
dent Taylor stated that he saw a
small frying-size chicken swallow a
little grass snake, the reptile b'lng
ten or twelve Inches long. Tt was a
pretty good mouthful for the chicken
and caused the fowl to do some very
hard swallowing, but the snake finally
disappeared, though It squirmed and
friggled until the chicken completed
the swallowing act. In a short time,
the chicken did not appear to be an7
the worse off from it.
