Savannah, Ga., August 8—The
cal market for spirit* of turpentine
In the week ending Friday was look
ing upawrd rather sharply. The
week was started the Friday preced
ing under rather unpromising Condi*
tlons, the article ruling at that time
firm at 37*£c and with a distinctly
downward trend. In fact prices grad
ually went lower until a trifle
thirty-five cents was quoted which
was the lowest value quoted In a num
ber of years for turpentine.
Toward week-end however some
of the larger exporters went Into the
market and through manipulation the
article was forced rapidly toward
higher levels, the final call of Friday
finding the market firm at 35% to 36c.
The outlook Is that prices will go
higher In the next few days but since
the support afforded Is wholly manip
ulative or professional the proba
bilities are that prices will again take
the downward path Just as soon as
the manipulators withdraw from the
trading arena.
The main trouble with the market
at this time and the most important
factor 1 In bringing lower values lies
first In the huge receipts which are
coming to daily and again to the
very large amount of tanked turpen
tine in this and other ports. This
combination, together with the gen
eral Inactive conditions to this coun
try and the large lack of demand
from the Continent Is of course detri
mental to the market and the general
range of fluctuations. The United
Kingdom, It Is true, Is taking some
little supplies through local dealers
and representatives but the trade
generally In the Kingdom state that
stocks are large and business condi
tions rather dull.
Rosins were in very good demand
for the week but prices like turpen
tine are somewhat lower. At the call
the followlftf prices
qidled: Water whlt<
glass $6.25. N. $5.75, <M. $5.15, K. $4.40,
$3.60, H. $3.50, G. $3.10, F. $3.05,
B. $2.75, D. $2.65. C. B. A. $2.50.
Stocks In both markets are over
sixty per cent larger than those for
he sae period last year. The receipts
to date are fully seventy-five per cent
havlor.
CROWD ON HUNT FOR LIONS.
A Drive at Brldgtbero Failed to Jump
Large Animals.
Conservative people who hare bo
often read sensational stories of
••wild beasts" at large In different
sectl ns of the state have been slow
to believe the continued rumors and
stories that have come from the
northern part of the county and from
the southern part of Worth ccunty to
the effoc* that Hons or extremely
’arge tigers w ore roaming the woods
and devouring the sheep and calves
etc. So continued have these stories
come and from such reliable sources
at It Is no longer doubted that some
strange animal ,ln fact a number of
them, are living in tha* section. The
animals -have been seen at short
range In the day time b.v perfectly
reliable parties and their tracks may
be seen by anybody at any time in
he ro'ds and A dds near Brldgeboro
these days.
Night before last a party from
Moultrie went over to Bridgcboro
with their dogs to hunt the animals.
In the party were Messrs. W. J. Met-
edl*h. Wash Murphy, Dick Brinson
and others. They carried a number
of dogs with them and they had no
difficulty yesterday morning in find
ing fresh tracks. The dogs balked on
trailing the animals with the excep
tion of one coon dog that followed
them slowly for a distance. There
was never a Jump made however, and
after making a drive through the ter
ritory that developed nothing, the
party returned last night
It is quite likely that the hunt will
* bad ag.-iin soon and other dogs
will be tried. There Is considerable
interest in the big game about Moul
trie and every fresh story Is listened
to with the deepest interest—Moul
trie Observer.
