both sides to the controversy being
very determined. Recently, U Is alleg
ed. the street hands at Mel-t began
grading a street on both tides of the
road at that place. They alto began
to dig some drainage ditches along
the (rack. The road’s agent at that
place went up and drove the hands
away.
Then, the town authorities sent the
town marshal down and had the agent
put under arrest for contempt of court
or disorderly conduct. Tho authorities
were de'ermlned to show that they
were "monarch of all they surveyed,’’
so the unruly agent was hauled up
and lined.
Then, It waa that the road got busy.
The IT. S. court was called upon to
stop) the ditching. The road alleged
that tho track was weakened and the
safety of tralnB, with their loads of
human freight, was endangered. Be-

Laura and Will Settled Love Affairs
In Sensible Sort of Way.
Will was very happy. Laura had
said "yes” to his earnest wooing, one
beautiful moonlit night, a* they wa'k-
ed home from church.
Yotr could hear him during the next
three months, whistling or singing
at the plow and along t.te h's'-.way.
But hla Joy was turned Into mourn
ing, when one Sabbath evening Laura
said "Will, I love you, but I don't
believe we should marry.” This was
a stunner to poor Will, who demand
ed her reason. "Simply this, Will;
You are a bard worker, and I believe
you would do your beat to make a
living, but your education Is very
limited, as well as mine. You would
be at a disadvantage in trying to sup
port a family. I really believe. Will
that my very love for you ought to
prompt me to decline your offer.”
Perhaps no young man In the coun
try ever spent a more desperate week
than this poor boy; but one night a
bright Idea struck him, and he hur-
tied over and said; "Laura, I have
been thinking hard for a week .and
I have come over to tell you that I
can’t live without you, and that I am,
going to start to sohool." She said:
“Will, There Is no need of your going
school for more than a few
months. See here what The Valdosta
Times has to say about the South
Georgia Business College. That's
what you need, Will, and that's all.
too. I feel It In my bones.”
When he told her good-bye over the
gate that night, Just what else jie
did, when their faces came close to
gether, Is none of your business.
Laura smiles now, when the young
men about Wll’s age come over for
him to straighten out their accounts,
make their calculations and do their
important correspondence. Laura, a
happy wife. Bays It Is all because
she took The Valdosta Times, and
learned about the South Georgia
Business College.
That's how It was settled.

One of the negroes there, according

about time for Bose to “quit his fool

means at hand tq stop him, he decid
