lev. Aaron S. Watkins Pays Co
• pllmenls to Bryan and Taft
He Says That Wnile Bryan Haa Been
Generally Considered a Tamper
anea Man he Haa In Fact Always
Been Wrong on the Question and
That he Haa no Chance—Taft Is
no Better.
Atlanta, Qa., Sept 14.—Rev. Aaron
8. Watkins, of Ohio, last night, to
si large audience at the Baptist Tab
ernacle, explained the principles of
«he national prohibition party and
■the light he la making as the nom
inee for vice president on that ticket
to free this country {fom tho evil In
fluence of liquor and the saloons
Rev. Watkins scored William Jen
nings Bryan and WllUam Taft In
Tegard to the nominee for the pres
idency on the Democratic ticket he
•aid:
"You have heard It said Mr. Bryan
la a temperance man. That may be
alright personally, but I want to say
to you that Mr. Bryan Is all wrong.
He has always been wrong on the
temperance question. Mr. Bryan has
been wrong for the past eighteen
years. He could have saved or at
tempted to save Uncoln, Neb., his
home, recently, when a contest was
held, but he did not use his Influence
to bring the 90 votes which decided
the contest In favor of the aaloon
over to the prohibition party. When
lie was asked to put the temperance
plank In his platform, he said that It
waa a matter of a purely local na
ture and should not be put Into na
tional politics. Mr. Bryan Is squar
ely against the temperance ques
tion.” -■ '■
Rev. Whtklns then took a look at
-the audlonCS' and, after stating that
there thlght be a few members of
-tto republican party among his hear
er*, he said:
"You can’t vote for Mr. Taft and
■vote for tem.perance, for he, also, is
•quaroly against prohibition."
Dr. Watkins was Introduced by W.
a Wltham. The candidate fo vice-
president on the prohibition ticket
began by stating that he came to
represent a great cause and not any
great man or mep. He entered right
Into the political Bide of the question
His flrst argument was along tho
fines that many said the temperance
question should be left out of .politics
bceauso there were grent flnnnclnl
questions to be decided. Dr. Wat-
klns gave some statistics about the
consumption yearly In the United
States of w-hlsky, of the loss of life
therefrom slid of the evils derived
from the saloon.
1 "You can't regulate prohibition,"
lie said "yon enn't regulato tho devil.
Ton have got to shut him off. The
aaloon howls when the preacher
goes Into politics but when a bloated
drunken capitalist goes In, It Is all
right The saloon stands ns Bn en
emy to labor and a friend to monop
oly. You'll not solve tho labor ques
tion until you get a sober sot of la
boring men lo deal with. You'll not

Dr. Wstklns, who comes from
ONo. referred to the late “Live and
Hot Uro Jones," mayor of Toledo,
and to his successor. the well-known
srvellst, Band Whitlock, as sons of
Fellal, and that they had the worst
governed city In America In spite
of wha* may or will be said to the
contrary.
When he came to the great nation
al parties, he said: "Bryan say« the
great Issue Is 'Shall tho people rule?’
■,Vr. Taft and Mr. Bryan won't name
the real Issue. For the pait twenty-
five years In Ohio the people have
wanted to put ont the saloon, but
they haven't been able to do It be
cause these parties have not sought
the real laaue. The people of Ne
braska don't rule. The people keep
np the republican and democratic
parties Just for show. They vote for
• name. Mr. Bryan haa had a differ
ent program erery time. lie haa
served np a fresh bill of fare erery
time. Unless something Intervenes
between now and election Mr. Bryan
baa no chance at all.”
Rev. Watkins throughout his entire
speech bad the utmost attention from
every ono of his hearers. He did

Notes. #
Savannah, Ga., Sept 15—Somebody
seems to have committed an error
in the printing or the Democratic
ticket to be used in the state elec
tion next month. The name of Hon.
Walter G. Charlton, candidate for
Judge of the superior court for the
Eastern Judicial circuit, appears on
the ticket, according to the sample
that has been sent here, as “Walter
Charlton," when It should be
“Walter G. Charlton.” Secretary
Phil Cook has written a letter to
the ordinary Instructing that the re
turns be made for Walter G. Chari-
Judge Charlton is now out of
th<* city but It is possible his friends
will ask that now tickets Uo printed
and the error corrected.
Hearing Proceeding Rapidly.
The hearing of the case brought
hv dissatisfied stock holders of the
Central Railway and Ocean Steam
ship Company to make the Central
pay dividends for the fiscal year end
ing June 30th, 1907, is proceeding
with rapidity before Hon. Wm. Gar
rard. auditor, but the evidence la
pretty dry stuff. The hearing is go
ing on in Col. Garrard’s office and
about the only persons present be
side th‘e court and the attorneys are
the expert witnesses who are being
examined. It Is about as dull as any
hearing has been In Savannah for
a long time. Yesterday afternoon
an adjournment was had for several
days to permit Col. A. It. Lawton,
attorney for the Central Railway to
go to Atlanta and argue a tax case
today. The attorneys of the Central
find life to be a very strenuous af
fair Just at this time.
Engineers' Meeting Tomorrow.
Tomorrow morning there will be
gin in Savannah a fire days conven
tion in which railroad engineers and
their wives are very mtich Interest
ed. It Is a union meeting of the
Brotherhood of Locomotive Engi
neers and tho Ladles’ Auxilary. Most
of the time Is to be taken up with
secret sessions but tomorrow night
the visitors will be welcomed to the
city by Mayor George W. Tiedeman,
Hon. F. M. Oliver and Capt Frank
P. Mclntire. There will be a re
sponse by Assistant Chief F. A. Bur
gess. of Cleveland, Ohio, the second
Jn command of the Brotherhood of
locomotive Engineers. Mr. Burgess
Is already here as Is Mrs. W. A.
Murdock. Grand President of the
Woman’s Auxiliary. It Is expected
that fully five hundred delegates and
ns many visitors additional will be
here for this conference. They will
come from all sections of the United
States. A day will be spent at Ty-
bee and an afternoon at Thunder
bolt. The occasion promises to be
one of pleasure and profit. \
Storm Missed Savannah.
Savannah has dodged another au
tumn atorm. For three days the
weather bureau has been tipping
the people of the city off to the fact
that there /as a storm In the Ba
hamas that m«ght come this way.
but this morning it was evident that
the blow had gone somewhere else.
Savannah has not had a storm 1n ten
years but regularly every fall phe
Is treated to a couple of scars by
<the reports from the south that there
Is a disturbance enroute this way.
Wanted for Wife-Beating.
F. L. George, a former 8avannah-
lan, has been arrested in Jackson
ville on the charge of wife beating
and an officer will be sent to bring
him back here. George will fight
being returned and after an extradi
tion haa boon secured the county
will probably have to make a show
ing in Jacksonville that a case has
been made out against him here. It
is claimed by bis friends that the
charges are trumped up and that
there Is nothing in them. George
while in Savannah, bore a good rep
utation. He Is a drug clerk.
