The local merchant* are getting
In their large fall stocks and the out
look la that trade In Valdosta will
be good this fall. There is every
reason to believe that the out-of-town
trade will he larger than ever before,
as the merchants are catering to
the high class trade very largely this
season.
Mrs. M. Williams has returned
from a professional trip of a few
weeks at Greenville, Fla.
The Jackson school house has been
completed and is ready for the open
ing which Is to take place at on ear
ly day. The school Is one of the
best equipped country schools In the
county and Mr. Strong, the teacher,
will do a good work there this year.
Mr. R. A. Knight, of Adel, came
down yesterday and spent the day
here.
Mr. W. D. Peeples has returned
from the Thousand Islands whore he
attended the meeting of life Insur
ance ag'-nts representing the com
pany with which he la allied. The
meeting waa a great one nnd he
says the trip was one of the moat
pleasant he has ever taken.
Mr. Harley Ik-e, of White Springs,
Is spending a day or two In the city.
Mr. James Riddle, of Eustis, Fla.,
Is visiting his daughter, Mrs. F. A.
Edwards, at Pine Park. Mrs Ed
wards, with her father, will leave to-
morrow morning for Thomasvllle,
where they will spend two or three
weeks with relatives. Mr. Riddle Is
a leading real estate man of Eustis
and said that times are looking much
better In his section of the state. He
said that the Florida orange crop
this year Is splendid.
Miss Ruth Converse left this morn
ing for Atlanta where she goes to
enter Miss Woodburry's school
Messrs. E. C. and W. F. Miller, of
Tifton. were In the city yesterday
and last night.
Mr. Jos. S. Peters, of Hahlra, came
down and spent last night In the city.
Messrs. Will Strickland and J. M.
Dame, of Jennings, Fla., came up

CARTER GET8 HI8 PARDON.
Court Officers’ Statement *Caused the
Governor to fake Action.

On the ground that the court of
ficials who tried him and the form
er supreme court justice who sus
tained the verdict say that he should
never have been found guilty. Gov.
Hoke Smith yesterday granted a par
don to J. G. Carter, sent to the pen
itentiary for 10 years from Lowndes
county In 1004.
Carter was tried on the charge of
criminal assault, a small white o^iild
being the alleged victim. Judge Rob
ert G. Mitchell presided. The Judge
Jury, county officials of both Lowndes
and Echols counties joined In recom
mending that Carter be pardoned.
Judge John S. Candler, who wrote
the Supreme court opinion sustain
ing a verdict of guilty, joined In the
request, saying it was his earnest
belief that had Carter been given a
new trial, as he deserved, that the
next jury would have acquitted him
He stated that had the appeal been
made on different grounds the ver
dict would have been turned down.
Judge W. H. Griffin, In a letter to
the prison commission, according to
reports, criticizes the superior court
judge for not having granted a new
trial, declaring that an innocent man
haB been held at hard labor for four
years.
“Unfortunately for the administra
tion of justice in the Southern Judi
cial Circuit,” he says in his letter,

Entertainment Given by Woodmen.
The local lodge of Woodmen of the
World held a reception and entertain
ment last night In their hall for the
henellt of the members of the order
In this city. The exercises began at
7:30 o'clock nnd continued until
10:30. The Valdosta Concert Band
was present and furnished music for
the occasion.
