THE VALDOSTA TiMES,
BICYCLE r
nit citH
PERSONAL MENTION.
iBie of file Pnaiissf Features for
(From Wednesday’s Daily.)
That the Harvest Home Carnival
next week is going to be the most
brilliant affair ever witnessed in this
aectlon of the state Is now fully as*
cured. Everything is in readiness
•' for the big event, and that which \
not already prepared is fully under
way and will be in perfect shape be
fore the moping sun of next Mon
day rises above the tree tops.
The Times has told several times
of the brilliant pageants that are to
be features of each day during the
Carnival. There is one feature that
sme have not told about, which prom
ises to be one of the prettiest feat
ures of the week.
The bicycle parade by day and
night, consisting of two hundred lit
tle people on their decorated wheels,
going through a series of drills and
evolutions that will be pleasing to
behold. At night these little riders
will have their wheels illuminated
by Chinese lanterns, making a very
pretty scene.
There will also be a number of
trick riders on the streets, besides
several commedians on high wheels,
short wheels and other freaky con
trivances. Mr. Ernest Parrish is in
charge of the bicycle parade and
•drills and is being assisted In.arrang
ing the wheels by Mr. Snellgrove, of
the Parrish Bicycle shop. Of all of
the pretty scenes during the carnival,
we dare say the bicycle parade will
be one of foie prettiest.
Other Features in 8hape.
The leading band of the week will
be the Royal Italian Band, of New
York, which is one of the finest musi
cal organizations in the country-
There will be other musical organis
ations, but there will be none that
wlILapproach in fame of this won-
derfui organization.
The illuminations will be
The lights are going to make 5 Val
dosta the best lighted small city in
the country, and none qt the great
cities will surpass the scene to be
presented.
The other attractions will be so
numerous that it is impossible to
mention them. Sufficient to say that
Valdosta.- Is going to surprise every
persoi^ who comes tp tfe Carnival
# next week and even the borne folks
are going to look on with amazement
at what has been done.
Did Care to Plead Guilty.
A negro named Frank McCoy' was
arrested night before last at one of
the colored boarding houses charged
with drunk and disorderly conduct/
Efforts were made by some of his folks
to get him out of the guard house
this morning, but he would not agree
to the terms. He was willing to plead
guijty to something, but not to the
charge against him.
"He does not even drink whiskey,”
said’ the woman who was trying to
secure his release, “so he could not
plead guilty of being drunk.”
It was finally decided to let the case
go to trial, at which time witnesses
will tell all about the charges against
him. *
Hughes snd Chandler In Valdista.
New York is a big town and a firez
ty good town, but It is not the only
one In the country that hat a Hughes
and a Chandler—the two candidates
for governor in that dtate yesterday.
Yesterday Mr. A. M. Chandler walked
Into Mr. C. H. Hughe's"place of busi
ness and, instantly, a half dozen fun-
makers wanted to have a "speech or
a fight.” Neither of the Valdostans
art In politics, however, and both
were leaning a "leetie" toward Chand
ler In the New York race.

0. B. Burhans Testifies After Four
Years.
O. B. Burhans, of Carlisle Center,
N. y, writes: “Abont four years
sgo I wrote, yon stating that I had
been entirely cured ot a severe kid
ney trouble by taking less than two
bottles of Foley's Kidney Cure. It
entirely stooped the brick dust sedi
ment, snd pain and symptoms ot
kidney disease disappeared. I am
glad to aay that I have never had a
return of any of those symptoms
dirlng the four years that have elaps
ed and I am evidently oared to stay
eved, sad heartily recommend Fo
ley's Kidney Core to any one suffer
ing from kidney or bladder trouble."

Looks Like the Irony of Fate.
Jim Young, who was killed a week
or so ago In a fight with two other ne
groes here, might have been living
today If his old mother had not
raked and scraped up all of her pos
sessions and staked them on his lib
erty. Young was convicted of run
ning a “blind tiger" and his lines
amounted to $760. His old mother
had some property and she decided
to keep him out of the chain gang.
She put up what she had and saved
him from the gang only to have him
killed In ft quarrel. She lost what
she had accumulated In the effort to
save him, and In a little while be was
killed.
This reminds the high sheriff of
another negro who recently got
divorce from his wife, the cost in
the case amounting to quite a sum.
The day the negro came up to pay
the cost and get straight with the
court officials, he learned that his
wife had died.
“My Lawd," he said, “If I hnd
known that nigger was going to die
so soon I could’er saved all this
cost."
Cotton Still In Good Shape.
Soa island cotton Is holding It*
own right along since the advance
of a few days ago, and the staple Is
showing up better In quality. The
staple for a week or two was pretty
poor, due to a streak of bad weather
which damaged the cotton that waa
then op6n In the fields.
The price today Is ranging around
19c for a good grade of cotton. The
receipts are fair. For the season,
the receipts promise to he much bet
ter than Valdosta has ever known
before.

that Dr. King's New Discovery Is the

The coming Harvest Home Carni
val Is not to be a catch-penny affair,
with a lot of cheap shows to fake
visitors to the city, but It Is to be
a home-made affair,, with enough
hlgb-clase, free outside attractloni to
fill up every moment ot time during
the four days that the Carnival will
ran. \ ,
One of the principal features
be the great mercantile parade on
Wednesday, when over fifty of the
handsomest floats that can be arrang*
ed will be gotten In line for, the
great parade. One of the finest
Italian bands in the country will furn
ish music for the ocoaslon. The
merchants are engaged this week In
getting their noats in good shape for
the parade and there will be abso
lutely no delay In getting It started
The decorations for the floats
will be handsome and many of them'
elegant.
The military parade and sham bat
tle on Thursday will he another
great feature. Ten or twelve com
panies will take part In the parade
and battle. The battle will be al
most as real as war time and will be
fought according to military tactics.
All of the genluB which Is required
In actual fighting will be brought
out. \
The floral parade on Friday will
be one of the events that will at
tract much attention. It will hevmm-
posed of scores of vehicles handsome- :
ly decorated with flowers. No circus
that ever came thli way have pre
sented parades half so bandsomi
be given during/ the earn]
raWona° besides the floral
parade, there will be jn automobile
parade In which flftyVw more hand
somely decorated machines will take
part. After the auto parade, there
will ho some races by some of the
fleetest autos In attendance.
Bsldes these handsome attractions,
there are to be a great many free
out-of-door attractions, such as vaude
ville performances, athletic exhlbl-
tlons, balloon ascensions each day
at noon, the trick house of clown
athletes and numerous other events
of a similar nature.
Besides all of these, there will bo
several first class attractions at
which a small admission fee will be
charged. License would not be gran
ted any and al kinds of shows for
that week, though exceptions were
made In the case of some really meri
torious shows. There will be enough,
however, actually free to satisfy most
people and to keep all straining their
eyes to see what will come next.
Among the sensational free attrac
tions will he a high dive by Charles
Bigney from the McKey building In
to a tank of water, four feet square
and four feet deep. This is a leap
head-foremost from a tall four-storv
building and Is one of the most dar
ing of events.
Tho decorations and Illumination;
for the Carnival are to be gorgeous
Two .thousand Incandescent- lights
are to he used In arches across 'the
principal business streets, making
that section as bright by night as
day. The lights are to ,be put upon
cables and these csblet will span the
streets In about thirty places, or four
or five arches to each business block.
The decorations among the stores
will be of flags and bunting, and
thousands of yards will be nsed In
making the display. The bunting has
already arrived and will be ready to
put up In the next two or three day*.
