cial meeting yesterday morning to
determine whether or not to try and
get a squad of convicts from the
state for street work.
The work which has been done on
the Dukea Bay canal has been such
as to convince members of the coun
cil that It would be better to try and

vict lease system In Georgia comes
to an end tomorrow, and already ar
rangements have been perfected to
take the convicts out of pqbllc
works from one end of the state to
the other. It Is estimated that
some 2.000 convicts in the coal
mines, lumber camps, turpentine
camps, fafms and other public
worka will the returned to the vari
ous countlel for road duty, and free
la^or will replace these men.
There are twenty-three camps of
various kinds In the state working
convicts. So far as known this
shift from convict to free labor will
not put a stop to a single enterprise.
Tomorrow afternoon .the Central rail
road will operatd a train of ten
