Lady Guest at Valdes Badly
(From Tuesday’s Dally.)
Intense ezoltement was crested at
the Valdes hotel last night by the
effort of some one to enter the room
ot a lady guest, and by the shots
which were fixed at the wouM-be
robber by night clerk Barco.
It was about one o'oiock that Mr.
Barco wan summoned by the inces
sant ringing of the bell to a room
on the second floor occupied by the
lady In question. He ban as hastily
as possible up stairs to the room,
but before he reached the room he
heard the lady screaming. She met
him at the door, and in an almost
hysterical condition, told him be
tween her sobs that somebody had
tried to enter one of the windows
In the room from the root ot tbs
porch which came up to the window-
Mr. Barco dashed to the window
and saw a man running toward the
other end of porch at a break-neck
speed. Mr. Barco raised bis pistol
and fired two shots at the fleeing
man, but the arc lights on the
streets were not burning and the
night was so dark that both shots
went wild. The man dashed Into
window some distance down tbs
porch and thus made his escape. On
socount of the darkness It was Im
possible to tell whether ha entered
an unoccupied room or not.
At the time there was no clus to
the man’s Identity or whether ho
was stopping at the hotel. Today,
