J. 0. ATI* COMFAMT, Low* 11. Hi,
Board of Trade Committee to
Confer with City Council
The question of an opera house
lor Valdosta, was discussed at
some length at the meeting of the
directors of the board of trade last
night and as a result, a committee
was appointed to confer with the
-city council relative to an enlarge
ment of the city hall for that
gmrpose.
The council contemplates build
ing an addition on the south side
-of the hall for the accommodation
-of the cells, or in other words, to
remove the barracks from their
present location and put them In
the addition. It was pointed out
by President Dekle that by making
the addition to the building two
-stories high and extending It clear
across the length of the building,
adequate stage and auditorium
-room would be provided, and that
with slight remodelling of the
(present Interior, a splendid opera
house could be ipade, with a stage
probably as large as that In any
theatre In the state.
It Is said that If the council will
make the enlargement a company
will lease the second story as a
theatre fo r a period of five years
at an annual rental of $1,600 a
Tear, furnish all stage accessories
and seats, and turn the property
complete back to the city at the
end of five years. The $7,600 ren
tal will considerably more than pay
for the cost of the additional work,
that Is'lf the council finally decides
to build the addition for the bar
racks. The trade would be a good
one for the dty, It Is very evident
It would not only get back more In
' - rentals than the Improvements
,«°at, but at the end of the lease
"Would receive the stage accesa-
-oiie$, seats and equipment
Vaidosta Is ppob^bly , the only
town' of stagin' tht’ State which
oannot boast of a play house. Its
location midway between Macon
and Jacksonville and Savannah and
(Montgomery, Insures the getting of
really first-class shows if w e had a
suitable house for them. All of
them would bo glad to obviate the
long lumps they have to make now,
by playing In Valdosta.
The advisability or possibility of
polling off a Trade Week neat'
- month, wag also talked over li
Informal way.,
the board 'While both-
Ing do^finfSras decided on, a com
mittee was appointed to sonslder the
mattsr and report at an early date.
Secretary Gleasner received a tele
gram from an airship man yester
day. saying he could give Valdosta
the second week In November, fol
lowing hie appearance In Savannah
during the first week of the month,
and that he would come to Val
dosta on’ Friday or Saturday to con
fer over the matter.
If It Is decided to pull off the
Trade Week, and arrangements
can be made with the alrahlp peo
ple, this would be used as one of
the principal attractions for the
occasion. Next to the north pole
discovery, nothing In the country
Is attracting as much attention as
the exploits of the flying men, and
an airship here would bring people
from far and wide. The whole
matter Is up In the air yet, though,
and nothing definite can be said- of
(It until the committee appointed
for the purpose of considering It,
makes a report.
A VERY PLEASANT AFFAIR.
An Evening of Music and Cards at
Homo of Mr. and -Mrs. Cranford.
Tbe moat delightfully'-Informal at
enlng when tbe young men boarding
fair, of the week was given last ev-

son street entertained their young
lady friends with an evening of mu
sic and cards.
Mrs. Cranford, with her cordial
hospitality threw open tbe lower floor
for tbe pleasure of her guests and
with Miss Cranford and Mr. and
Mra. 0. B. Foster, greeted everyone
lnformaly upon tbelr arrival.
There were card tables arranged
for those who cared to play, while
vocal and lnetrumental eelections
were enjoyed by all.
The ever popular punch bowl was
presided over by Miss Cranford. Cut
glass nopples with bon bons were
placed on' each table.
At tEe close of this enjoyable even
ing delicious refreshments were serv
ed by Mra. Cranford, Miss Cranford,
Mljis Martha Cranford, West and
Tom Cranford.
Those planning this delightful ev
ening In addition to Mrs. Cranford
were Mr. and Mrs. O. B. Foster, Mr.

George Sherman.

It Is said that the municipal elec
tion held In Macon last Saturday,
was the most expensive one In the

spent .five thousand dollars each,
and It Is estimated that fifty thous
and dollars changed hands In wag

Atlanta, Ga., Oct. 6—The Court
of Appeals, In the decision handed,
down yesterday reversed Judge
Mitchell In denying a new trial to
William Robinson, convicted IB
Lowndes Superior Court of bigamy,
mainly because the first wife sat
near and openly derided Robinson
It will be remembered by those
who witnessed the trial that when
Robinson wont on the atand
make his statement that the first
wife hsstlly moved'her chair to a
point directly In front of him and
laughed sneerlngly at him during
the progress of the statement. This
lack of court discipline. It Is said,
prevented the defendant from hav
ing a fair and Impartial hearing.
Attention !■ also called to Ordi
nary. Simms’ remarks as Robinson
was leaving the stand that the
couple, (Robinson and hit second
wife) would never live together
again.
Judge Russell held also that
"Five years’ absence of a husband
or wife, without Information of the
fate of such husband or wife, cre
ates a presumption that the absent
spouse Is dead, so that the other
spouse may marry again without
committing the offense of bigamy.”
Attorneys Will Not Discuss Mattsr.
A Times reporter had o brief
conversation with one of the at
torneys for Robinson, after the re
ceipt of the above telegram from
our Atlanta correspondent, and the
question was asked, whether the
decision of Judge Russell, as em
braced In the last paragraph of the
message would not amount to an
acquittal of Robinson when he was
placed On trial again. The attorney
wa s rather non-committal, bnt
stated that ench might bo,the case
under certain conditions.
The general opinion seems to ba
if Robinson can show that ha hell
not heard from hie first wife In five
years before he was married to
Min Simms, and did not know that
■ha was alive, further prosecution
on the charge of bigamy will not
hold. If wa ( established In the
trial that Robinson married Miss
Conway In 1901 and Miss Simms
In 1908.
It la understood that the case
will likely come up In the Superior
Court here at the November term,
and bafore that time It Is Impos
sible to say what turn the matter
will take.
Whether Robinson will make' an
