PRESBYTERIAN
CHURCHSYNOD
Important Matters up Wore
Gedartown
Atlanta, Oa., Oct. 12—The Synod
ot the Presbyterian- church of Geor
gia will meet In Cedartown Tues
day, November 9, ot 7:30 p. m.,
and will continue In session for
about ten day*. The Rer. W. W.
Powell 1* pastor of the Preabyterlan
church at Cedartown. He and his
people have already begun their
preparations for entertaining the
synod. The people of all denomina
tion* are throwing open their houses
and offspring tbelr hospitality to
the expected visitors.
The Synod Is composed of all the
Presbyterian ministers of Georgia
and one elder from each Presbyteri
an church. There are 120 ministers
and.232 churches.
One matter of vita! Importance
before the Synod will be the elec
tion of an evangelist to take charge
of the evangelistic work or the en
tire synod. This la a new ofllce. The
committee In charge of this work
Is prepared to recommend two
aamea to the Synod. Both are resi
dents of other svnod* and either
would bo a great addition to the
Presbyterian forces of Georgia.
The Synod will probably give a
good deal of time to the dlacnaslon
of Christian education. The last
General Assembly elected Rev. E.
E. Boggs, formerly president of
the University of Georgia, secre
tary of the assembly’s executive
committee on schools and colleges.
The Presbyterians of Georgia are
showing a great Interest In Chris
tian education at this moment. The
Agnes Scott College,-at Decatur, Is
entering upon a campaign to make
Agnes Scott a million dollar Insti
tution. The Presbytery of Atlanta
la busy reorganizing the Donald
Fraser sHhool at Decatur - with tbo
hope of making it the best prepara
tory school for boys. The Savannah
Presbytery ts making, a great suc
cess of the school at Blackshear.
The Presbytery of Athens Is en
thusiastic over the school at Na-
coochee under Its new management.
Thsx want to make It a great school
for the mountain boys. All of these
Institutions will no doubt come ta
for '<i‘ full share of discussion at the
Synod.
The "elect Infant clause” Is np
again. The Preabyterlan Confession
of Faith say*: “Elect Infanta, dy
ing Infancy who are damned, bnt
saved by Christ through the spirit,
who worketh when, and where, and
how He plesseth." Tho framer* of
the Confession wrote this statement
to tell how Infants are saved and
to toll how many oro saved. It
does not say that all are saved. On
the other hand It docs not say that
any are lost. But there are many
In the church who fee 1 that tho
word elect implies that there are al
so non-elect Infants. They want
| that word elect stricken out. That
! would definitely cement the Confes
sion to the doctrine of the universal
I salvation of Infants. The church
Is already committed ta that doc-
' trine. In 1902 the general as-
jsembly of the Southern church-
passed, almost unanimously, this
resolution: "This assembly Is fully
persuaded that the language em
ployed In chapter X, section 2, of
our Confession of Faith, touching
Infants dying In infancy, does not
teach that there are any Infants dy
ing Intnfancy who are damned, but
Is only meant to show that those
who die In Infancy are saved In a
different manner from adult per
sons. who are capable of being out
wardly called by tho ministry of the
word. Furthermore we are per
suaded that the Holy Scriptures,
when fairly Interpreted simply
warrant u* In believing ilia-, all in
fants who die In Infancy are ho-
eluded. In. ^hr election of grace, and
are . regenerated, and saved by
Christ through the spirit.” Nothing
could be more explicit. But a large
element In the church wants that
pnt Into the Confession.
, The general .assembly of the
whole church a year ago asked the
63 Presbyterians of the church to
say whether they wanted any
change In the infant clause Of ihe
Confession. A large majority
answered In the ' affirmative. The
last assembly appointed a commit-
tee, consisting of the Rev. Dr. W.
W. Moore, president of the Union
Theological Seminary, Richmond,
Va., and Rev. Dr. W. L. Dingle, ot
Atlanta, to take the answers of
the Presbyteries, and to study them,
and to recommend to the next ai-
eembly what change onght to he
made In the famous Infant danse.
This' whole qnestlon It now up for
discussion before the Piesbyterles
and Synods.

HOSPITAL PLAN
Atlanta, Ga., Oct U.—The state
prison commt»Ion la expected to
meet at the state farm In MUledge-
vllle Wednesday to conalder the
plans and specifications which bars
already been submitted • for the pro
posed state tuberculoati hospital and
reformatory. It la already apparent
to the commissioners that the appro
priation for they* buildings Is woful-
ly insufficient. T{ fact according to
the statement of one of the commis
sioners the (8,000 appropriation for
both tuberculosis and reformatory
bulldlnga la hardly more than la
r ’ITT* ■ :(
needed for the erection of one of
thefe. buildings. "The appropriation
Is $8,000," said, one of the commis
sioners, "truth' to tell, It will take
88,000 to erect one of the .buildings.
We really need $10,000 for the**
atruoturea.”
"How are w* to gat ltt”
"We have a plan, apparently quits
satisfactory, but we are not yot
ready to give It out We bellov*
that all the funds needed will bs se
cured from this source.”
In the erection ot the bulhllngl
convicts will be used, that la to tay
convicts as art speciality trained for
the work. Richmond county will
furnish Its quota. The wrok of theaa
prisoners on the county tuberculosis
hospital was brought to tbs attention
of tbo commission by Judge William
F. Eve, of Augusta, who has greatly
aided the commission In getting up
plana and specifications for the pro
posed hospital and reformatory. Aa
la known. Judge Eve’s work, In con
nection with ths Richmond county
hospital aided by the county con
victs attracted great attention and
has been the subject' of mnch favor
able comment ' His asaLstanco and
advice was asked by the prison com
mission in the' preparation of plans
and he will probably be consulted la
the sward ot the contract for th'S
erection of the building. - Dr. I. P.
Atkinson, physician of the state
farm, and anpertntendsnt ot tb« re
formatory, have also greatly aided
the oommlaalon In the preparation
ot plans and apeelficatloM.
‘Just when the contraot for ths
building* will ha awardsd has not
boon determined but It Is considered
probable that the commtsiton will
arrive at aoms definite conclusion
at lta conference In MUlsdgsrllls
this week. The two buildings, as
planned, on the state farm property
will be erected with' an oy* single
to convenience and durability. Tbs
commissioner* will require Of Its
contractors the. very host Work, and
the huDdlnBi will he of a Uni of
which the atate may well feel proud.
