GROWTH OF TWO NEGROES CHANGE IN DU MANN ANO
TWO STATES
Columbus, Os., May 5.—The Geor
gia and Alabama industrial index
says In Its regular weekly issue:
"Quite an Interesting feature ol
construction activities in Ueorgla
and Alabama is the tact that bank
and office buildings of really preten
tious character are no longer con
fined to the larger places, tor a good
many of the smaller cities are get-
ting In the skyscraper class,
nouncement Is made that a six-story
building or that character Is to
erected at Quitman, Ga„ and this
will be a splendid achievement for
the Brooks county capital. Only a
week or two ago a six-story build
ing was announced ror Valdosta, Qa„
and although Valdosta Is one of the
leading cities of its class In the two
states a structure of that size Is die
tlnctly creditable to it. Not very
long ago there was completed in
Tuscaloosa, Ala., an office building
that would attract attention In any
city In Alabama. These three are
conspicuous Illustrations of-the ten
dency In the smaller cities to erect
modern, well equipped buildings.
"A New Hampshire manufacturer
of 'shirts Is to move his plant to Au
gusta, da., and operate It on Ueor
gla soil. An Illinois investor bought
a plantation near Huntsville, Ala.,
for ISO,000, will divide It Into sman
farms and will then return north
and tell prospective settlers In Illi
nois and Indiana of what he has to
offer, nnd it Is predicted that -the
place will bring a great deal more
than 130,000 on Its second.salo. Sue-
land sales were held at Co-
, Ca.. and Rome, ,Ga.. and
a-Iarge sale Is announced for Griffin.
Ga.
“Two additional cement plants
seem probable for Alabama. A move
meat has been launched to erect an
automobile factory at Augusta Ga.
A new lumber company was charter
ed at Macon, Oa. At Blrmlngaam,
Ala., contract was awarded at $37,-
714, for the erection of a r fraternal
order building.
“Randolph county. Ueorgla, Is to
rote on the Issuance of 480,000 of
road-improvement bonds, Attalla,
Ala., awarded a substantial paving
contract, as 'did Birmingham, Ala.
_ Anniston, Ala. has been offering ex
emption from taxation for a period
of years to all new manufacturing
plants and now a business men’s or
ganization In that city Is supple
menting this by providing free sites
as well, and also giving financial as-
alatance to worthy enterprises.
"Waycross, Ga., started out to
raise $20,000 for Its Toung Men’s
Christian Association, and' In five
days the subscription totaled, over
$20,000. Gadsden, Ala., granted the
franchise for an electric interurban
line. Atlanta, Ga., engineers were
commissioned to prepare plans for
a half-million dollars of public Im
provements at Key West, Fla. Dur
ing the week 18 new corporations
with minimum capital stock of
$212,(00, were chartered In the two
states."
