THE LAND OF
OPPORTUNITY
Major Glessner, of the Geor
gia and Florida Road, Telia
of Achievement
(From Thoreday's Dally.)
"The opportunities presented to
Augusta merchant* in South Georgia
are some ot the greatest (hat any
' business community has ever had,"
says Major W. L. Glesner, land and
industrial agent of the Georgia and
Florida railroad, In the Augusta
Herald.
Major Glessner Is enthusiastic
over the great growth of the territo
ry traversed by the ^Georgia and
Florida and he says that It will be
the fault of Augusta merchants lr
they do not reap a beautiful harvest
from tbe splendid new section which
is now developing so rapidly.
In an Interview with a Herald re
porter Major Glessner gave some
striking facts concerning the “wire-
grass country," some of which are
as follows:
"The figures recently given out by
the United States census bureau in
regard to the population of Georgia
show a wonderful growth In Soutn
Georgia,, and especially In that por
tion known as the Wlregrass section.
“In the 46 counties south of a line
drawn from Augusta through Macon
to Columbus, and east of the Flint
river, the Increase In population from
1900 to 1910 was 200.094, or 61 per
cent of the Increase of the entire
state—one per cent, more than the
other 100 counties.
"In the 16 counties traversed by
and immed'ately tributary to the
Georgia and Florida railway the In
crease In population was 61,619, or
13 per cent of th( Increase of the
entire state.
“Nine new counties have been
created In Georgia since 1900, and of
these eight were In South Georgia,
three of which are traversed by tbe
Georgia and Florida 'railway.
“Tha. records In the office of the
land and Industrial agent ot the
Georgia and' Florida railway show
__tbat within the past nine months
-24,664 acres "hf land along the line
ot that road have been sold to par-
- -ties principally from North Georgia
, and the Carolina*. and 166 families
' have been located. In this no ao-
count has been taken of the substan
' —tlal growth of the »f "Char-
lottevllle, Uvnlda and Alston, which
although only a year old have busi
ness blocks that would do credit to
a city ot 6,000.
“Not only has South Georgia In
creased In popualtlon,. but Its
crease In wealth has been equally
marvelous.
"In the 46 counties south ot a line
drawn from Augusta through Macon
to Columbus and east of tbe Flint
Tlvcr, the Increased assessed Valua
tion ot 1910 over that of 1909 was
617,864,674, or a fraction more than
45 per cent, of tbe Increase ot the
entire state.
"In the 15 counties traversed by
and Immediately tributary to the
Georgia and Florida railway tbe in
crease wag 65,217,009, or 16 per
cent, of the Increase ot the entire
stato. The present taxable value of
these 15 counties Is 681,011,582
“The low price and productivity
of the lands of South Georgia Is
attracting hundreds ot farmers from
the more thickly settled parts of
North Georgia and the ' Carolina*,
where land la high In price and more
difficult to cultivate. These peop'e
t re the most desirable class of set
tlers, as they understand the soil,
climate and product* of the country,
and are generally energetic and pro
gressive farmers, doing the wore
-within their own families and do
r.nt depend upon shiftless negro la
bor."
