Killed a Large Snake.
On last Friday afternoon, while
walking over an old field on the
farm of Mr. Walter Bunting, about
tow miles west of Madison,
Bunting and R. V. Dial noticed the
shed skin of a mammoth diamond
backed rattler lying about three feet
away from whAt seemed to be a
gopher hole. Being quite a woods
man, Mr. Diel suggested the possi
bility of this being the snake’s abode
nnd arming themselves \ith long
sticks the gentlemen proceeded ,to
investigate the hole. After scime
minutes they heard a hissing, ind
upearthed a rattler seven feet _
ver, killing it instantly.
After assuring themselves It was
dead, they forced a stick between
the teeth of the reptile and held it
up, and state that the amount of
poison matter coming from its
mouth, would have easily filled half
a tea cup, being of a thick yellowish
nature, and that Its fangs wore cer
tainly all of an inch long.
Placing both the snake and the
shed skin In a place of safety they
proceeded with their walk, only
soon to come upon another hole, and
digging there unearthed a coachwhip
snako equally as long as the rattler,
which was also shot and killed.—
