MURDER TRIAL
OF A WOMAN
Mrs. Carmelia Pignatella on
Trial at New Ark for Kill*
ina A. Antorino.
Newark, N. J., May 23.—Consid
erable public interest is displayed
in tbe case of Mrs. Carmela Pig-
natella, who wae brought from her
cell, whore she has jeen confined
for more than a year, and arraigned
in court today to stand trial for the
alleged murder of Antonio Antorino.
The killing occurred at the
woman's home in Mon tael air
Apiail 24 of last year. Sue ig said
to have confessed the deed, explain-
city every day is shown up in the ing that she killed Antorino in de-
tide of traffic betwen the railroads lending herself against his impor-
here more than any where else.
During certain hours of the day
the largo amount of vehicles that
throng the streets from Hill avenue
to below the Georgia Southern rail
road amounts to almost a conjestion
nal case, being disposed of. Judge
Thomas has been pushing matters
all <jay long and all of theattendants
upon Court have found out that he
will not stand for any delay that
can be avoided.
One of the interesting cases at
the court house thig morning wap
Dr. L. B. Beauchamp (of the good
Kentucky family called "Bochomp"
there, but known as “Becham"
In Valdosta) who was Indicted by
the Grand Jury on a charge of vio
lating the prohibition law. Dr.
Beauchamp wag there himself to
deny the charge. The chief witness
for the state had a quart bottle
about two thirds full of a brownish
liquid which he declared he bought
from Dr. Beauchamp. The Docter
There are every kind of vehicle
on the streets at almost all hours of
the day, aud about 11 o’clock in the
morning, when the trains are coming
in On the Georgia and Florida and
the Georgia Southern road, the
stream of hacks, drays, etc., that
surge along the streets in all direc
tions make a problem which is not
easy to handle.
The time ig approaching when
Valdosta will have to institute traf
fic rules in the . treets to prevent
congestion andi also to prevent ac
cidents.
It is hard to do this by police reg
ulations, but hackmen, draymen,
and all other® in charge of teams
will have to learn the “rules of the
road” and obey them.
All of the wholesale houses, the
declared that he never saw the wit-1 packing houses, the mills and others
ness before in hi® life, that he that have drays, do a large amount
•never saw the liquid before and of business on all of these roads and
that the witness had never been to'the tide of travel to the freight de
bts place, in other words Dr. Beau-'pot® when all of these concerns are
champ Intimated to the Jury that the getting off their orders probably
witness was not telling the truth, ten times as great as it was ten
tunitie, to elope.
Antorino was stabbed to death
with a carving knife. Mrs. Pignatella
explained to tho detectives that in
Italy several years ago the dead
man paid her attentions. Both, how*
ever, had wedded since coming to
America and the woman declared
that her answer to the man’s pro
posal to elope, made several weeks
before the killing, was she would
not leavo her husband and five chil
dren.
The lover continued his suit and
on the day of the tragedy at tho
Pignatella home during the absence
of the husband, to protect her
honor the woman declared she was
compelled to slew Antorino.
The Jury returned the verdict of not
guilty and Dr. Beauchamp left the
court room to return to his home
and family.
A. C. Brownie who during Chlrst-
mas shot a hole in Mr. Andrew
Dasher’s head wa® In court and plead

■was accned of stealing hogs was
tried this morning and the court
directed a verdict of not guilty.
Zeke Howell wa B tried this morn
ing on a charge of carrying conceal
ed weapons and was convicted.
Hadley Howell was next put upon

Yesterday afternoon Lon*a Clan
ton was tried on a charge of assault
with intent to murder W. L. Clem
ents. The Jury found him guilty
end recommended that he he pun
ished as for a misdemeanor. V,

cotton which was shipped over that
road.

VELOCITY OF LIGHT.
On* of Jupitor’o Moon* Showed th*

The speed at which light travels
through space was discovered al
most by accident 250 years ago. It
grew out of an irregularity in the
movement of one of Jupiter's
moons. At one period of tho year
this moon was sixteen minutes and
thirty-six seconds behind time—
that is, behind the time - table It
had kept six months before. This
moon would disappear behind Ju
piter and at times bo sixteen min
utes and thirty-six seconds late in
reappearing.
In other words, the time table
Jupiter’s moon kept in spring was
different from the one it kept in
fall. It is important to note that tho
variation occurred every six months
greater than it has been before and W" 1 ?- Every haif year the
