Julr 12.—* wall of flame* Is sweeping over the forest of north ern Michigan today. A half dozen towns have been destroyed and scores of lives lost and many other towns are threatened. Ozarlter Is partially wiped out. Ah plna and Cheboyabane are being swept by fire. Lewiston, Alger and Turner are threatened. Many small villages have been de vested. The property loss will reach Into the millions. Meager reports Indicate that at least one hundred < lives have been lost And hundreds aro fleeing from the terlblo holocaust. Forest Burning In Ontario. Ottawa, July 12.—-Three hundred miles of forest are ablaze In northern Ontario. Several towns are threaten ed and a score of people are missing 400 Refuges Reach Port Huron. Port Huron, Mich., July 12.—Four hundred refugees from the forest fire arrived today. They a ay the loss of life Is appalling. Many lifeless bod ies were found In the streets of towns after the towns had been fire swept. Many sought refuge In the lakes and were drowned. The city of Alpena Is apparently doomed. Alpena’s Blase Under Control. Alpena, Mich., July 12.—After a terrific fight, fire 1s under con trol this afternoon. GREEKS AND SYRIANS MAY 6ET INTO WAR Savannah- Colonies are Angry Because Syrian Girl Mar ried a Greek. Savannah, July 12.—The Greek •ml Syrian colonies In Savannah are almost at war over the marriage of Mies Essie Rahal, a Syrian to Mr. Charlie George, a Greek. The brlde’a parents became frantic when they heard of the marriage, the ceremony of which had been performed by a magistrate and they took their daughter with them. They objected very much to tho nativity of the groom and did not like him on general principles any way. They abut the girl up and treated her rather roughly, said those who saw her in the house. Fin ally the groom bethough himself of a ruse to get the family out of the house. He went before the magis trate who had married him to his sweetheart and swore out warrants against her whole family for breach of the peace. While they were at the magistrates offices arranging bonds he slipped back to the house and stole his girl wife away again. Now he has her at hl a home and says he is going to keep her. The girl’s father swears that he will have her back again and more trouble Is expected. The girl contents herself by saying she married George because she loved him and that she is going to stick to him no matter what hap pens. White Convict Had Thro Years for Subbing His Wife. Mllledgevlle,’Ga., July 12.—W. H. O’Neal, a white convict at the state prison farm, was shot and Instantly killed this afternoon by a guard, whllp he was endeavoring to make hts escape. He was shot In the back, the bullet penetrating the heart. .He was 57 years old nnd was sent np from Laurens county for stab bing his wife. He was serving three years’ sentence and had been on the farm one year. No hlnme Is 'attached officially to the guard by the authorities here. Atlanta, Ga., July 12.—A hand some, red-headed actress, now under arrest at the local police station, Is believed to know more than anybody else about the circumstances which led up to the double tragedy which occurred at 41 Crew street yesterday morning, when Robert G. Ingersoll, a traveling man, put a bullet through his wife’s body and then killed him self. It Is not believed that Mrs. Bessie Henry, the actress, was responsible for the tragedy, or that she inspired the shooting, but she Is held be cause she and the young wlte, Mrs. Ingersoll has been close friends, and were before the shoot ing. ± two yonng jnen had come to call 6fi*Jffn. -Ingersoll and Mrs. Henry, fbut It Is denied by Mrs. Henry that this had anything to do with the shooting. ANOTHER TRIAL GIVEN NEGRO “Kid" Glover is Granted Respite from Gallows by Supersedeas. Cordele, Ga., July 12.—Kid Glover convicted at the May term of the su perior court of the murder of Char ley West, another negro, at Rains In the early part of January and sen tenced by Judge Whipple to be hang ed today, through supersedeas pro ceedings by his attorney succeeded yesterday in getting the sentence postponed for hearing before the su preme court. The people of Valdosta ought not to remain quiet until they have a g>od up-to-date auditorium.
