WATCH FOUND
IN STOMACH OF
AN JILLIGATOR
Macon Man Thinks he
Lost Watch in Florida
ANOTHER THEORY WAS THAT
THE 'GATOR HAD MIXED A
LITTLE GIRL WHO WORE THE
WATCH ON A CHAIN.
(From Wednesday’s Dally.)
Dr. H. W. Walker, ot Macon, says
the Telegraph, believes that he can
*olve the mystery which surrounds
the finding of a lady's gold watch
Inside of a dead alligator, at For-
eyth, last Thursday.
Three years ago while fishing from
the pier at Atlantic Beach, Dr.
•Walker accidentally dropped his
-wife’s watch In the water, the time
piece being Jerked from his pocket
•when he was in the act of throw
ing his line out in the water,
old fisherman rigged up a drag and
-worked all afternoon In an effort
to recover the watch, but without
success. Dr. Walker says that the
tide was out at the time and by
peering down Into the water he could
see the bottom of the ocean and
■could see all sorts of Inhabitants ot
the briny deep swimming past him.
Including a number of sharks.
When he read the story Sunday,
he recalled the loss of his wife’s
-watch three years ago and by putting
two and two together he arrived at
the conclusion that the watch found
Inside of the alligator at Forsyth
Is his property. If It Is there It will
he little trouble to Identify It. The
■ease was solid gold and engraved
-with the Initials "C. J.’’ Attached
to the watch was a fob which had a
Knights of Pythias' seal on It. The
-watch and fob together were prob
ably worth between $50 and $100.
Dr. Walker will get Into eom-
.nunJcatlaiL.wHh-the finders of. the
-watch and will give his description
so as to determine whether or not
the watch .Is really his. He says
that If It Is and he can recover It
be will value It at ten times what
It Is really worth because of the
experience through which It has
been. His belief la that the alliga
tor ventured out Into salt water and
swallowed It and then returned to
■Grove Island, Fla., where 'It was
captured by J. M. Jackson, and
eventually taked to Forsyth and
placed In the pond there.
The story printed Sunday went on
the theory that the finding of the
watch cleared up the mystery sur
rounding the disappearance of
child Just a few weeks before Mr.
Jackson came to Forsyth with the
•gator, bln theory being that the
•gator ate the body of the child
and In that mnnner got the watch
Inside ot it, where It remained three
years. ■ ■
BARBER WORK IN THE JAIL
Jailer Dagger Found Razor in Font
Jackson's Cell Today.
(From Wednesday’s* Dally.)
This morning when. Jailer Dugger
went to look after the negro prison
ers In the county Jail he found one
of them, a negro named Alex' Fen
gereon, who Is to be carried to the
asylum today, with bis hair trimmed
close to the scalp and the negro had
also Just had a clean shave.
These facts excited the Jatlerls
suspicions and be began to make
Inquiries as to where the scissors
came from with which Fergersdn’s
hair was trimmed. ” One of the ne
groes finally told him that the hair
was cut with a razor and that the
razor belonged to Tom Jackson,
who Is In Jail under sentence of
death, but who has been given
respite for thirty days from last
Friday.
It Is against the rules for prison
ers to have weapons of that kind, so
the Jailer confiscated It. Jackson said
that he. had had the razor ever since
last November and that he had been
sharing himself and letting other
prisoners shave with It.
Negro prisoners do not hare to
have a razor In order to shave them
selves provided they can get hold ot
a piece of broken bottle or any
other kind of glass. There Is al
ways a sharps edge to broken glass
and the average negro can shave
himself with It about as quickly as
he can with a razor.

The tax Value* of the city last

As a matter of fact the finance

they are trying to equalize values as
much as possible. They have found
a very wide difference In ’ the way
that people gave In property for tax
es. Some of them gave In their
property for nearly aa much as It Is
worth, while others gave It In for
many years from one-fourth to one-
half ot Its value.
It Is understood that the apprais
ers have changed the valuation on a
great many pieces of property, rais
ing some of them to double whst
they were given In. One piece of
property that was given In for four
thousand dollars last year was re
turned this yesr for two thousand,
though It Is said that the property
la much more valuable now than It
was two years ago. A good deal of
property In the business portion of
the dty has been given in for a
half of what It Is worth. Resi
dence property Is not expected to be
given In for full valuation, or even
for two thirds value, especially
where so much ot the value la mere
ly for ornamental purposes, as the
