Mr. A. E. JOknston and wife, of
Madison, wore among the ylaltore to
Valdosta yesterday.
(From Tuesday's Dally.)
There Is a possibility tnat the
people of Valdosta will nave an op
portunity of hearing the Rawlings
trial and tne trial of Tom Jackson
with all of Its pros and cons once
more. It Is said that "It la after
death that we measure men’’ and
that truthful history la hardly ev.r
written until time has nad an op
portunity to get rid of the blots and
blemishes that go wrong when the
record Is made.
It ts understood that Tndge Oscar
Smith, who defended the Rawlings
boys In their trial and who has de-
cldtd Ylaws in regard to thatr guilt
or Innocenee, Is not pleased at the
sormon preached by Dr. John A.
Barnard laat Sunday night and
Judge Smith has already challenged
him for a Joint debate on the sub
ject. It is said tlrat Dr. Barnard
was rather severe In criticising Got.
Smith for pardoning Jesse snd
I.eonard Rawlings and he also was
severe In nls criticism of the three
governors who respited Tom Jack
son. It was reported on the streets
that Dr. Barnard went so far aa to
say that If he were a lawyer he
would not take a case to defend men
who were guilty of deliberate mur
der.
It was this statement and the crit
icism of the Rawlings case through
out that Judge Smith objects to and
he wants an opportunity to present
the case upon its merits and upon
the facta. Aa la well known, Judge
Smith Is a man of very decided
views.. He was employed to defend
the Rawlings boys and he was con
vinced of tne Innocence of Leonard
and believed there were strong cir
cumstances favoring Jaaae, aa wall'
as Milton. The two younger ones,
especially, he la prepared ' \ defend.
He stated yesterday thttwi could
not go Into the pulpit and discuss
matteys of this sort and that
does not care to discuss thsm on the
Sabbath day, but he regards It
so seriously that he will debate
It before an audience of Valdosta
people, provided the preacher will
appear at the same time with hit ar
gument and the proof to auatatn hie
argument.
There waa so much exzcltement
In Valdosta during ths trial of the
case and se many people In the
court room that It was hard
Judge It upon Its merits, end there
are a great many people tn this city
and section who would be glad to
hear the matter discussed In order
to get hold of any new facta that
might be brought out
Judge Smith has studied the case
ever since the killing of the Carter
children and he Is probably ac
quainted with all of the circum
stances. Dr. Barnard has also gone
deeply Into the case and based his
sermon upon the facts as he saw
them. It Is not known whether he
wishes to debate the matter before
an andlence In Valdosta, but It
would be an excellent way for the
public to get hold of the facts, as
well ss Dr. Barnard's views.
The Times has no Interest In the
matter except as a chronicler of
happenings snd we usually welcome
Innocent discussions, events and In
cidents that may. change the dull
routine and add to the gaiety of
things, and at tho same time fill tip
a little space In the paper.
