The announcement by Congress-
self this year caused a good deal of
surprise in Valdosta, as it was
thought that he would make the
race, and, of course, It was expected
that he would Win It.
It Is generally conceded that
there will ho a lively race to suc
ceed him. Already two or three
candidates are In the race and It Is
very likely that there will he two
or three others. One possibility is
Judge Oscar Smith, who has been
Mr. Brantley's Committeeman In. S*a Southern road early this morn.
The trapeze work and the rope
walking were good features, while

a warm personal friend of Conrgess-
Brantley and he has stated fre-
■ quently that he would like to suc
ceed him In congress If he retired.
Judge Smith has a great many
friends In this city and section who
would bo glad to see hint get Into
the race and who would do all they
conld for his election.
Ho also has many friends In the
upper, part of the district, having
been raised In Tatnall county and
having a large family connection

Smith has already had many letters
from his friends throughout tho dls-

Idea of announcing..
Col. Walker May Enter Race.
It Is highly probable that Cgl. J.
Randall Walker, of thl* city, will
be la the congressional race to suc
ceed Congressman Brantley. Mr,
Walker’s friends In other parts of
the district have already taken the
matter np and have been urging
him to enter the race. He has as
surances of strong support In *11 of
the counties end his friends tell him
that there ar e five counties In the
district, having sixteen votes that
are conceded to him.
There are two or three other
counties In the district which his
friends declare that he can carry,
giving him twenty-two of the thir
ty-six votes without doubt, thus as
suring him of election.
