the other was slipping a pair

It was-learned from him that
knew nothing about the negroes. It
then dawned upon Mr. Jones that
the story which the negroes told was
for the purpose of robbing him of
the hat and clothes, and when they
failed to get the goods on Mr. Wal-
drep’s name, one of the negroes
proceeded to steal some clothing
anyway.
: Polioeman Jacobs wa« notified of
the action of the negroes and he
started out to find them.' Both of
them were found and were carried
to Mr. Jones’ store, but they had la-
ken ofi their overalls and put on
different clothing, so they were
hardly recognised and might have
escaped had It not been for the fact
that the policeman caught them
while they were changing their
clothes In a negro saloon.
At the county jail they confessed
to the theft of the pair of trousers
and also to the fact that they were
using Mr. Waldrep’s name to heat
Mr. Jones out of his goods.
