OLD COINS AND BILLS
Jin. D. V. Baker Writes of Old
Hills and Old Times.
(Prom Friday's Bally.)
Mr. Editor:
I have been somewhat amazed over
the excitement about "old' coins"
and their pitiable value and while
there none to rnlse visions of wealth
I have coma Confederate paper cur
rency which I think it of more In
terest. I have e 6c, 10c, 10c and
86c bill, and a number of large Mils
from 810 up to 8600.
I remember a screen which my
mother made when I was a little girl
end which was covered with 8100 or
81.00 bills, I have forgotten which.
My father had great faith in the the
cause of the South and be laid up
plies of the paper which ha took In
exchange for meat and Hour at bla
mill on the Catawba river In South
Carolina.
I have many reminiscences of that
old mill, I think my nephew le etlll
running It, and of the faithful slave,
«To was miller and accountant,
“Uncle Ned” had an education,
could not write, but could mean
figures. The mill being four miles
up the river from our home, the old
man would come home to epend Sun
day with his family and to give my
father account of the business and
turn over the money collected,
was one of the moat trustworthy
men I ever knew. He married the
mother of his sixteen children after
Lee’s surrender and there are no
better negroes In all that section of
the country now than the, descen
dants of old "Uncle Ned."

"Here They Are, Itoecoe."
Probably the most surprised man
in Thomasvllle yesterday was Amoa
Bottoms, when he was called upon
by Judge W. H. Hammond, of the
city court to pay a fine of 86 tor
contempt of court. He was acting
eg deputy sheriff and htd been cent
cut by Roscoe Luke to bring In some
witnesses wanted la n case. Return
ing with them, be called to Mr.
Luke on the other aide of the court
room, "Here they are, Roscoe," and
Judge Hammond immediately In
formed him that he was lined g$ for
contempt Judge Hammond, like a
good many other of the judges In
Georgia, !■ making an effort to en
force the rules upholding the dig
nity of the court and governing the
