that until the money is paid he is re

such a claim as this than to fatisfy it.
The king of Naples cannot pay any
such demand.

THE PLAGUE.
The horrors produced by this
terrible scourge, may, in part be
imagined by the following : In j
the kingdom cf Naples, the sea
cordon, on account of the plague
at Noja, has an extent of 500
miles, and requires daily 10.500
men to occupy the parts. The
town of Noja, about 1 1-2 Italian
miles in circumference, and con
taining about 6,000 fouls, is ciofe
ly furioundcd by a double cordon.
The firii is formed bv two ditches,
60 paces from the wall of the
town, and 30 paces from each
other, 10 paces broad, and 8 feet
deep, behind which a battalion,
with two cannon, forms a close
chain. Over each of the ditches
is a draw-bridge, confining the ac
cess to the town by a fiagle gate,
provided with a double grating ; z
board is attached to it, with an in
scription forbidding any person
from approaching the ditches from
the town under pain of death. To
keep order in the town itfelf; there
is a detachment of 24 and one offi
cer and \ -commandant. A regi
ment of infantry and a corps of
cavalry form the second cordon, 5
ithles from the Noja, in an extent
cl 25 tmies, in a close connexion
with the cordon cn the lea fide—
all intercourie between the inhabi
tants and the military of thd several
cordons is molt rigoroully prohi
bited, so that a priest from Noja,
who had fold to a Neapolitan sol
dier a pack of cards, was {hot as
well as the soldier, the former after
j having been deprived of ecclefiati
i cal dignity, the soldier on the fpor.
The fame rigorous measures are
taken at Curiu. Three Englilh
soldiers, who went from one cor
don to another, to fee their com
rades, were shot.
This dreadful scourge appears on
the decline in Italy.
Bft ITISH A R MY STAFF.
We have a long account of the
particulars belonging to the reduc
tion in the fluff of the Biitifh ar
my. The whole that is proposed
to be done will produce a saving
for the present year of about 40,000
pounds, but hereafter expected to
be 80,000. This is like “ throw
ing our a sprat to c*tch a mackarel”
—and the people of England will
feel it 10. The arrangement leaves
out very few of the great folks—
the difmilTal of a single one of
which, who might as easily be
spared as the lead of fhofe
ed, would, perhaps, save quite as
| much money. But the system muff
| needs be to make the rich richer,
: and the poor poorer.

SHEEP WOOL.
Froa Boston Paper. —Mr. Z.
Hayden, the great dealer in Ame
rican woo! and manufactures, it. a
paper addrelTed so the MafTaehu
fetts Agricultural Society and pub.
lifhed in the Agricultural Reperto
ry, inveftigntes the causes of the
great ir.fiability in the faleof Ame
rican wool—(fating them to he a
want of uniformity in preparing if
for market—-bad walking—net
walking at all, and the fleece roll
ed up with taglocks, manure, &c„
adhering to it—deceptions as to
the grades, &c. Ac. ; so that the A
merican manufacturer, inexperi
enced as he is, cannot judge of the
real quality, often finds himfelf de
ceived in his purchase. and is led to
prefer buying the imported Spati
ifh wool, which is so prepared that
they can * now its real value. For
these diladvantages he proposes the
following remedy.
‘•I should propose that an uni.
form method of preparing sheep
for (hearing, and packing up the
woo! for market, should be recom
mended to the wool growers, un
der the sanction of the Maffachu
fett3 Agricultural Society, through
the medium of the public newspa
pers. This method, in order thta
it may be generally adopted, should
be too simple to be inconvenient;
it might be as follows; —Wafh the
sheep in as warm water as can con
veniently be had, {always avoiding
that which is fait or brackish) as
clean as practicable; after which,
let them run in a cleanpafture from
seven to fen days, as circumstances
will admit, for the purpose of re
newing in a fmafl degree the yelk
or grease, w'hich is alike necessary
to the preservation of the wool,
and the further cleansing it when
necessary. During the time of
{hearing, cautiously avoid bam lit
ter and other dirt. After careful
ly separating from the fleece all
taglocks and manure, wind it up
as tighi as pombfc v. ltn.-i mat
inward . After which it would be
well to put it into a clean, dry ap
artment for a week or more, for
the purpose of drying before pack
it for market. The mod conve.
nient bags may be made of tow
cloths, of from 7-S to 4-4 w ide, of
three breadths each, from 2 to 2
i-4 yards in length.
Should this method go into gen
eral practice, it would, I conceive,
by rendering it much iefs difficult
to determine the value of Ameri
can wool, be a great Hep towards
putting it upon a fair competition
with that imported, and cause a
mere regular demand. It would
alio be in fuiiable order for the op
eration of ffapkng, a pre-requfite
to a proper inspection.*’
