WASHINGTON, JUNE 21.
Some intervening obstacles prevent
ed us (as we (hould have done) from
giving to our patrons a few obferva- !
tionson the Congrefliona) appropriation
bill, and the prefcnrments of the Grand
Inquest of this county, which will be
ft err in our columns of to-day. We;
(hall, however, devote a few para
giaphson these fubje£ls in our next.
A part of the presentments, we con
ceive of a very interesting nature ; its
dißaltrial and iufinuating ftvle is of a
policy well calculated to produce ef
fetls, in which the Republican and
true parriot (houid take ConGderabie
patt: in fadl, much mifehief may arise
from circumstances of seeming indiffer
etice. And as final! and creeping

CONGRESSIONAL SAI ARIES.
Accustomed as we are to look
for every tiling that is unreasonable
and absurd in the Federal papers,
we were hardly prepared to expect
the ridiculous comments they are
now making to fix the odium, (if
any exifls) of the late act of con
grtfs reflecting the pay of members
on the Demo’ raiic party. That
more Federalists voted on this aft,
in rroportion to their numbers,
than Republicans, is so plain and
undeniable a matter of record, that
ere would think of nothing short
<>f infatuation cguM influence men
to attribute the measure to the lat
ter. It is a common, but mistaken
remark that such absurdities can
co no harm when opposed to facH
so universally known. But are the
fafts universally known ? Will riot
these fame papers suppress the yeas
and nays on this queflion ? Yes,
sorric will fay ; but tn?n the re
publican papers will publish
them. And how many ordinary
readers of Federal papers, think
you, ever see a Republican ? They
will fee it asserted over and over,,
in the only papers they ever read,
and never be fuffered to fee any
thing in contradiction. Thouiands
and thouiands, who never read but
one fide, will (lore this, in addi
tion to many errors, in their minds,
and regulate their political conduct
accordingly.
We venture to assert, that there
are many now in this country who
(fill believe all the old Rories, that
JefTerfon and his party had began
to colled bibles to burn, and ma
ny other ridiculous tales. In this
way, the public mind is vitiated, 1
falsehood while truth is
sedulously luppreffed. If it is a
crime to break up or diflurb fami
lies by slanderous arts, what is it to
poison the minds of a great com
munity, and endanger a nation by
the inculcation of error ?
