Vhai we should seek in the Sciences is truth, am

I T is now more then six years since 1 first coi
ceived the idea of publishing periodically tl.
move work, for the following reasons, which ai
obvious and striking : There being no publicatio
of the kind in tho state ; and, for aught 1 knov<
throughout the., whole southern states; we ;n
compelled consequently, to look to the .ortb, an
through her, to Europe, for every thing new, rar
and interesting iu the science. It would seen
peculiarly appropriate, just at the piesent tim
when the most awful visitation is hovering o erth

almost every city aud town of any importance in

can much longer escape the impending evil. Be

Alediciue had its origin in necessity: in motives
of heitevolencc and philanthropy—in a disposition

progress of intellectual, moral and political truth,
is becoming a more safe and agreeable abodo for
man, the vt tarics of Alediciue should not be idle.”
The American Liuuams, the late venerable Benj.
S. Barton said, “he who discovers ouc valuable

his species than Alexander, Cesar, Buonaparte
or a hundred other conquerors. Even his glory,
iu tho estimation of a truly civilived age, will be

mired ravagers of the world.”
W’liatis the condition ofour department of sci

ical loro is lurking far behind (comparatively
speaking,) the active improvements of the day—
the spirit of the times admonish us to look forward
with an uuriveted gaze, upon the advance of man
aud the “march of mind.” There is medical tal
ent in Georgia, and yet she is almost without pro
fessional character ; because she has not enter
prise, industry arid energy. There is manifestly
but little written 011 Alediciue in our state ; medi
cal reading* too, (3 not pursued with avidiiy, less?
studied, properly understood and regarded.
Let us turn our attention to tho COnstnut aud
indefatigable labors of many American teachers;

On prc.’eutiug to the people this prospectus, tho
editor deems it superfluous to say one word with
regard to the utility of Newspapers. There are,
however, particularly at this (ime, other duties
that may not be avoided so easily.. Iu.entering
the political arena, we maypot couceal o'ur senti
ments; for we conceive if eurdtity, to our friends
arid opponents, frankly to avow them. . The
State Rights’ Doctrine as contended for by the
best expounders of the"constitution, are those we
avow; w - hold that each State has reserved to
hersClf all hnu every right, not surrendered up and
enumerated in the constitution of the United
States’; that they may, nay should, and have re
served for the very purpose, these rights, that
wheuever occasion requires, they may bo exer
cised; but the States should ho careful in .the ex
ercise of what are cal led 1 and supposed 10 be re
served rights, those surrendered up arc uot viola
ted : for they are uo more the rights of the States
than if they had never been exercLod hy them.
The General Government loo, must move withi
its legitimate sphere, carefully observing what
"powers it may exercise—what are reserved to
the respective sovereignties, and what have not
been granted. While here, we remark, that
wc .arc uncompromising Union meu, and feel aud
cpns.ider oijrselves identified with nil those that
now rally ender the standard of tho twenty-four
States; whatever minor distinctions may hereto
fore have separated us.
As respects tho parties in Georgia, too, we
have a word to say—Wo have acted with per
fect satisfaction to oitvVives, with the republican
party. The Spirit of that party will bo carried
into'our labors; but we wish it understood that
we have not, and cannot now consent, to advance
our party views aud prospects hy contending a-
gainst those of our opponents; wc ofl'er to our
opponents the free use of our columns, if they are
properly used.
It is useless to say any thing, of the, interesting
country in which the Intelligencer will be locaten
—the farmer is invited there by its fertile lands—
the unhealthy, by its waters and air—tho ehy-
mist by-the valuable treasure found in its bosom-
The earliest attention and notice w ill bo given

isteuce of a specific gastric juice, and advocates

truth: . .
The recent splendid discoveries of Abercrombie
of Scotlaud, of (Abernethy, Lawrence,) Clutter-
buck, Smith, Tealc, etc. ete. of England, are their
everlasting monuments. Germany is likewise mo
ving on. But above all, stand the sous of France,
and of true medical philosophy, (Audral) Brous-
sais, Baron Larrey Pinel, Laeuuec and othe -s;
these moderns of tho'moderns, have wholly up
rooted the old aud ancient systems of routine me-
dicino :—They have sought, however, not so
much to overthrow former systems foumic I in er
ror, as they have to discover truth, and the real e-
tiology of disease. They have not only succced-
en in removing the rubbish, bat in establish.ng
medicine ou {i surer #ind a firmer foundation, and
given toMtthe line cf march onward to perfection.
It would be uncandid aud it is not to be denied
or concealed, that the doctrines of the French
school, aud particularly, those of the deservedly
renowned aud immortal reformer, Broussais, will
be held and maintained in this Gazette. \V e re
gard them, (arid, they are universally admitted,)
as containing the purest and nVpst substantial, of
the great fundamental truths of physiological Med
icine. They are founded in data: the dissecting
knife has been made to reveal aud develope from
.pathological anatomy, principles of a fixed char
acter. ,
They will be as enduring ns time, and are as
solid as adamant. Principles involved in cause
and effect, that were heretofore considered mys
terious, inexplicable, are now known aud estab
lished facts. In"the mind , of Broussais, positive
philosophy has sought aud found confessedly a
regenerating and redeeming spirit.
We come riot without diffidence, presenting our
humble offering, feeble aud retired ns it is; to con
tribute our mi to at the altar of professional
science:—If wo can but give a zest to the young
mind, an iucUuadou and direction to medical in
quiry; it is all.xve b'ope arid expect ; it is tho “ue
plus ultra* of our wishes.
Some oftho best talent of the State is engaged
to assist and contribute iu the work and we con
fidently expect to be able to concentrate and com
bine such a fluid of foreign and domestic intelli

ble, if uot agreeable, almost any where.
The co-operation of. professional gentlemen
every Where is earnestly dfesired Original com
munications aud essays, aud cases reported, iu
the practice of medicine, surgery and obstetrics,
arc solicited. The work will be issuod from the
press in Macon, iu au octavo pamphlet form,
comprising some iorty or fifty pages, once iu two
months, *o commence 011 the first of January, or
as" soda as'a sufficient number of subscribers are
obtained to authorize the undertaking, at four
dollars per.annum.
All-editors friendly to this design, in the State
and throughout the Southern States, Tethiessee,
Ohio and Florida are requested to give the above
a few insertions—Florida! that country on which
the eager eye of every botanist is turned with
such peculiar pleasure—its wilds are still, how
ever unexplored to a considerable extent by civil
ized man, and the pages of Botany and the Mate
ria Medica are uot yet made to bloom with its flow
ers, of tell of its native productions, they still ex
ist only in fancies fiction and storied song.
“Full many a flower is born to blush unseen.
And wast its sweetness on the desert air.*’
We trust, that e’re long the sons of science, who

treasures.
