To the Editor of the Southern Plant, r :

that from actual exp o mt the first can be pro
duccd, and of superior quality—aud I am san

ultimately'!)® found-to succeed equally.
Some years ago, i sent to New-York for the
most approved species of tho Red Currant and
lire Goustbcrry. I found that the plants I recei
ved did not appear to he so much at home, in ]at.
■lit) in Alabama, a* I could have wished. This
however I readiiy accounted for, on a recollec
tion of the difference between the climate iu
which they wt re brought to maturity aud the one
they were then found in. The first year I look
ed anxiously for rwie shoots, which I believed
were gaining one step at least iu acclimation.—
At the fall I obtained anumber, and whichl care
fully cut off aud planted iu a rich garden soil, in
the latter part of January; That year I found
my old plauts after pruning and a slight manur
ing, do hotter—my mw ones however shewed a
much mote vigorous growth. On every appear
ance of a dry spell of weather, I carefully water
ed, with a decoction of cowtail. By the fall they
were fine plants. As early in the second year as
the u eatlicr would admit. J planted on each side
of my row of bushes, about four feet from them,
a row of the common butter bean, for the purpose
of producing during the warm season, a partial
obstruction of the sun’s rays, throwing the vines
of the hcan, in the form of an nrhor, over the
plants, some Seven feet in height. After the neces
sary attention that year, my hushes grew admira
bly. The following spring early I gave the ground
a good coat of rotten lime
stone, pulverized—a species found throughout
commodations as will prove satisfactory to those
who call on us.
Tho usual great promises of good TABLES,

The third year I. had the pleasure of seeing fine
hunches of flowers, and equally fine of fruit.—
This last dre-ssing I am assured answered the
double purpose of assisting the growth of the
plauts, and rendering the earth cooler aud more
retentive of moisture around the roots of the
plants—two qualities this species of limestono
just!\ claims. My bunches arc large, aud berries
also, the juice rich and finely flavored.
It is generally known that the most Northerly
climates produce these two plants in the liighe?S
perfection. As you approach the South, the
production of these fruits in perfection declines,
until, as your correspondent says, they cannot be
produced. They are plants that evidently de
light in a cold climate and cool summers—but it
still remains as certain, that much can be effected
by acclimation in each of the three kingdoms.
This factouglit to induce our exertions in making
trials ; and this induced me ;o try and create an
artificial soil and climate. I had observed that
iu the Cancbrake lands, as wc call a particular
section of this State, you never feel heat while
iti it, if even partially shaded-?r*the soil tinder youf
feet is always cool, and the atmosphere around
you singularly cool for the summer—while iu the
sandy lands during the warm mouths, you feel
often oppressed with heat, both iu and out of the
shade. This sectioii of country rests on a mass

a pair of scissors, and set them out in the usual
