In Memory of Mrs. M ary E. Russell, who
departed this life Dec. 6, 1835.
SISTER in Christ! thine was an early grave.
Far from the spot where broke thy morn of life.
With brightest promise of a cloudless sky.
Thy sun has set, to rise on earth no more !
If'herc were the lov'd companions of thy youth?
Why came they not—around thy bed of death.—
To watch thy “burning light”—amidst the gloom
Of nature struggling in her fiual hour J
And, where, thy Father's hand? I saw it not
Embracing thine! Thy Mother’s eye, and voice,
O ! where were they ?
Thy Bale was near thee;
And his artless smiles, like genial sttn-heams,
Cheer'd thy faiutiug heart. By faith—resigned.
Thou gav’st him lo the arms, and care of one.
Whose never-ceasing kindness wa3 a pledge,
That she would train him for the bliss of heaven.
And near thee, loo. were Heralds of the Cross:
Christia.is were there, of different names, aud
views.
United by the ties of kindred love,—
To offer prayer, and “weep with tltoso that weep.”
But, where was he.
Whose soul was knit to thine—in sacred bonds,—
So sonu to he dissolved ?
Behold him there !
How could he mourn—to see thy triumph near.
While angels waited to convey thee homo ?
He heard thy dying counsel,—clasp'd thy hand.
And felt the pressure of thy last farewell!
No pang was suffer’d to disturb the calm
Of holy rest, which mark’d thy closing sienc.
The victor slept in peace !
That clay retains the image of her Lord !
How beautiful in death J
Her spirit, cloth’d
In white, redeem’d, and blest, forever reigns—
Before the throne of God and of the Lamb.”
