TO A. I-
The s’inshine of thy spirit’s fled,
And clouds of darkness fall
Upon thy youthful heart to shed
A sad funereal pall.
Yes 1 thou hast sung a requiem
To hopes ercivliile so bright;
Gone from thy brow in the sweet germ
Of joyousness and light.
When first I saw thee in the hall,
Where Pleasure's vot’ries throng,
And mark’d thee fairest of them all
That brightly passed along.
I look’d in thy deep lust’rous eye,
And with prophetic gaze,
Read thy ill-starred destiny,
Tho woe of coming days!
I heard the deep tones of thy heart,
And jj' evv what fondness uwe t
T'.ere, iu be non from thee by art
And passion seeming leu.
I marvel not thou snould’st bare lov’d
(Thou beautiful! unblest!)
Him, who tho’ vile as he has prov’d.
Seem’d formed of Heaven’s best!
There was a language in his eye,
v A charm upon his tongue,
A gracefulness and witchery
On ail his acceuts hung:
But ah 1 his heart—thou could’st not tell
What guilt and treachery
Bound it in an enduring spell
Of darkest sorcery!
And since this vilenoss thou has learn’d,
Oh banish thy regret.
Let thy sad heart from him he turn’d,
Ana school it loforget.
The bright and laughing spring is here,
With sunshine and with rose,
Making these things of earth so dear,
To bring the heart repose.
The world is lull of poetry,
And shall it bt> in vain
That earth with her swt et harmony
Would soothe thy spirit’s pain ?
The dreams that haunt thy mind,
8till, still thy soul enchain;
Ah! mourn not unresign’d.
What ne’er can be again!

I much delight me too in fops—those shams,
(Or whole pretenders to a half affair,)
With soul* as pale and watery as clams,
Lor sing themselves into a listless air,
At “squeezes” lounging and at home in “jams”
They quite compel a modest inaa to swear.
E’en such an one I just now recollect.
Who yawning carelessly sometime or so.
Retired coolly from the sad effect,
And thus discoursed his friend upon the blow:

These things are all delightful in a w ay,
And speak most favorably for “learning,"
It shows the dawning of a brighter day,
When such existencics with ardor burnjngj
Must winga flight beyond the narrow swnj
Of “things terrene,” and with a lofty yearning

OF FRANK FROLICKSQMF..
t
Ah, well a day for childhood’s happy hours,
Ere wo were taught to sigh for love Or fame.
When fancy strewed the path of life with flowers,
And friendship seem’d indeed not ail a name.
We thought not.then of “lutes” or “shady powers,”
But night gate'iaflgiiihg'dreaths, affd morning came,
Fresh as a rosebed after April showers;
But let it pass—the world is still the same,
We cried for “sugar” then or “barlow knives,"
And now we fritter peace away for wealth or wive*.

Talking of this brings vividly to mind
The fondest moment of the schoolboy’s clay;
When distant from the biich rod of his kind
And stripe-bestowing friend he flies to play,
Or under some extended oak reclined,
Spreads leisurely before his fond survey
A store of cakes, molassess, bread and cheese,
And with an “otium cum" or appetite “at ease,"
Is Jailed to slumber by the passing breeze.

Youth is the season of instruction—then
We see displayed some weakness which too much
Assumes a form more culpable ’moegst men.
And teaches us to scan the lives of such
As we have known—that we may mark again,
How oft that foible answers to the touch;
If we would profit by the lessons of the past,
’Twere well to turn at times to bye-gone days,
Lest some slight fault should grow to crime at last
Whieh first we deem’d unworthy of dispraise.

I’m pleased to hear your social hermits rant,
They have a most peculiar stylo and way,
Iudcod theschowling Dcrvises would haunt
A sober fellow to his dying day,
They stand from out the “common herd” and vaunt,
No link to bind them to such soulless clay;
Alone, as one cut loose from even' tic,
I cast myself adrift upon the tide,
But from this dreary bosom not a sigh
Shall tell the struggles of my wounded pride,
v
Be mine the reckless laugh, and mine to jest
At friendship, love or sympathy—and wear
Forever on my brow that sweet bequest
To those whohaply feign it not—the fair
Anil gladsome smile which speaks a heart at rest;
■ For he whosd dearest hopes hath been to share
Another’s slightest grief, aud worship with a deep
Devotion to the soul—nor meets but cold disdain.
Extends no kindred glance to those who reap
The bliss of humaniife without its bane.
tv
’Tis a bootless task to reckon up the fate
That may come, still 'there is within the soul
A shadowing forth of ills which soon or late
Must shew all uuatainable the goal
Of earthly bliss—we strive against a state
Foredoomed to all who hope, with pride elate.
To raise the veil of hidden mysleniM; and create
A brighter scend than waits the eager thought
Of all that wo may seek or may have sought.”

Friendship.
There is e plant that never dies:
’Tis not of Earth but Heaven:
’Tis tinged with pure celestial dyes,
Its odors wafted to the skies,
By breeze or tempest driyep •
'Tis not a tender fragile thing;
It strengthens with the storm I
And midst the dreary waste it stands
A soul-inspiring form—
Thine, Friendship, thine!
There is a flame that’s ever brigiit,
Enkindled on a holy shrine:
It burns a sacred, steady light.
Amid the gloom of Time’s dark night,
It seems a lightdivinc:
’Tis not a transient sickly flame,
A meteor of the air:
It glows through time, and past the grave.
It lives forevor there—
Thine. Friendship, thino!
A friend, who read the article in our miscella

Adventure" called upon us this morning, to statq
a circumstance somewhat similar, which happen'

i stive.
He states, that several years ago, ho was invi
ted by a seafaring friend, a captain, to visit lu'3

rous of showing his guest all the apartments < f his
vessel, the coptaiu attempted to open a mint
which was designed for lady passengers, but
found it locked. lie inquired for the keys,—but
it could nowhere he found. Calling the steward
he rated him severely for his carelessness in losing
ihe key After a little while, the missing article
was recovered.
Meantime, howover, the captaui had spread
refreshmeht before his guest, of which both par
took,—and a friendly segar followed tho lunch,
shortly after which, the host, havingbusiness on
shore, left the ship. The yisiter. left to survey
the vessel ad Ibjtum, Colored the ladies ’ rpan-
tnent with his segar in his hand- Observing a
large cask, partly covered with a piece of sail
cloth, he removed it a little; and ihrost his hand
beneath, still holding his segar in it! Ho bad
plunged his fingers uearly lo the knucklosin some
fine, grainy substance, when the thought' struck
him that it must bo poieder! lie withdrew his
hand with the quic kness of thought. It was pow
der, with which his inquisitive digits, retaining a -
glowing fire in their hold, had been carelessly-
playing! His excitement was extreme- Thq
ship was alive and busy with men ; and had his
hand extended oue eighth of an inch lower, every
ono on board the vessel must have perish

captain, fearful of accident, had locked the door
of the room, and forgotten it, Our frieuci ob

Why deem the world a desert waste, and yet
There is a loneliness which closer clings
To those who would be happy and forget
The saducsss which a wounded spirit brings;
In vain we call to mind the scenes we met
In earlieriiines. ’tis as a thousand sting*
Which urge us ever on, till weak and worn.
We yield all hope, and writhing in the scorn
Of haughty bitterness, wo weep that we were born,

I something fancy too, your pipc-clay lads,-
Whom genteel taste has moulded into apes,

To boast of triumphs in their flirting scrapes,
It looks so much like modesty, and adds
