SOUTH BOUND BUOGHSTION3.
Ad?Antag6d of tfa© Bout© Through
Brunson Presented.
BmUXSON, & C., Sept. Si).-Editor Savan
nah Morning Sews: For some time I have
been thinking of writing a few lines con
cerning the South Bound railroad, or that
porilo 1 of it which is to doss through South
Carolina. It seem, that the board of
directors, or those controlling affairs of the
South Bound, cannot decide whioh way to
eo after crossing the Savannah river
—whether by the direct survey through
Brunson and Graham’s, 8. C., or to go
around by Allendale and Barnwell, 8. C.
Now it does seem that the route offering
the most permanent inducements should be
selected—such as the shortest way, the
most level and the best tempered route,
the one which would furnish the
greatest amount of freight, travel, etc.
Those advantages are ail offered in the
direct route, and no one knows it better
than the chief engineer employed to survey
the different routes. The route by Allen
dale and Bara well being hilly and undu
lating while the one by Brunson and
Graham’s Is level and well-timbered. I
notice that a great deal is being written in
favor of the Barnwell route, and powerful
efforts being made to induce the public, or
rorhaps the board of directors, to favor
that route, while nothing is being said or
done in favor of the direct route. I no. ice,
to > that in taking the rights of way and
subscriptions from the people along the line
of the direct route that persona living on
and interested in the upper or Barn well
route were the ones employed to take these
rights of way and subscriptions for both
routes. And while there is nothing wrong
in this action of the board, it would have
been but justice to all parties to have em
ployed someone not interested in either
route to do this work. Several persons on
the direct route are anxious to subscribe
who have not b.’en seen, and some of them
complain that they hare not bad an oppor
tunity to do si. YVhile on this subject I
will say that the amount of subscriptions
already taken on this route can be doubled,
and will be if the opportunity is offered.
It needs no argument to prove which is
the best timbered route, because any one
who knows what a pine is, knows that
level lands product) the pine timber of the
south. I see that someone writing in the
Allendale Enterprise speaks of the pine
timber lying on the upper route between
Allendale and the crossing on Savannah
river, and naming several parties owning
the timber, and 1 suppose the writer being
over zealous in favor of the Allendale route
has included a portion of the very fine tim
ber lying along the direct route between
Brunson and the river. This belt of timber
extends along the line of the direct survey
through the most fertile section of lower
Carolina from the Savannah river, near
Brighton to the Congaree, and even be
yond.
Again it seems to me that the matter of
cost in construction aid of keeping in re
pair would be quite an item to be consid
ered in selecting a route in which to build a
railroad, and while I am not well posted as
to the cost of building railroads, it must be
a great deal cheaper to build iu a level coun
try than in a hilly one, and in this case the
love! route has the advantage of being the
shortest one by several miles, which is not
only a big thing in c nstructing, but a
bitter one in keeping up afterward; and
also of quicker transit, which is, or should
be, another important matter for consid
eration.
A glance over the two routes is sufficient
to satisfy any unprejudiced mind in favor
of the direct route, outside of the many
thousands of dollars whioh would be saved
by adoptiug this line. L. F. Hduhks.

A SCRANTON TUNNEL GHOST.
Whisky in That Vicinity is Said to be
Vary Bad.
From the Philadelphia Inquirer.
“I hear you folks are going to have a
railroad tunnel here in Milwaukee,” re
marked N. L. Hewes, a New York drum
mer, as he sipped a glass of Milwaukee
brew in Schiitz hotel yesterday. “Well,
whenever I hear of a rail road tunnel 1 nut
reminded of a story told to me by a Phila
delphia friend of mine. Mind you, I am
not responsible for this story; it comes from
a Philadelphian. According to him it seems
that some years ago there was occasion for
a railroad company to build a tunnel at or
near Scranton, Pa. The point at which
digging was tj commence was at the base
of a hUI, upon the side of which a country
graveyard flourished.
When the gang of workmen was ordered
to get down to business and begin making the
cut, some of them who were superstitious
objected to desecrating the dwelling place
of the dead by cutting under it However,
they were told to gp to work or skip and
make room for men who were less squeam
ism, aud overcoming their scruples, they
wont to digging away with pick and shovel.
Work progressed favorably for some time,
aud an opening had been cut in the hill
far enough to reach a pitchy darkness,
when one day shortly after noon hour an
Irishman who had gone in ahead of his
companions rushed back, and falling into
the arms of one of them shrieked; “I’ve seen
the devil; he’s coming for us all.” The other
workmen thought the man must have be
come suddenly demented, and disposing of
him continued ti e r way in the darkness.
VV hen they had come almost to tne point
where work was to be resumed the whole
party was suddenly almost paralyzed by
the appearance of a great, throe-headed
monster, which suddenly shot forward out
of the side of the tunnel exposing the trinity
of heads and part of a hugs, scaly body.
His eyes were like big balls of fire, and a
huge horn projected from the center head.
Several of the men fainted, and the others
escaped from the place as rapidly as their
legs would carry them. They reported
what they had seen to the foreman, who
railed at them for what he called their
nonsense, and, calling an a sistant,
the two went off to see what the foolishness
was about. It was only a few minutes
before both of them came rushing back
with blanched faces and every indication
of the most agonizing terror pictured on
their features.
When they were sufficiently composed to
speak they corroborated the story tolk by
the workmen, and described the terrible
thing that appeared to them exactly as it
had been described to them. The news
spread like wildfire, no man could be found
with the temerity to enter the tu inel again.
Work on the tunnel had to be abandoned,
and there was not a man in the vicinity
who did not always give It a wide berth at
night, and few of them cared to linger
about it very much during the day. The
two men who fainted in the tunnel when the
monster first mode his appearance were
never seen again.”
