WAYCBOSS’ NEW POSTMASTER.
No Changes in the Clerical Force to
be Made for the Present.
IVayeross, Ga., Oct. 21. —W. A. McNeil,
•who has received the appointment as
postmaster at this place, has sent on his
bond and other papers to Washington.
He will receive his commission when
Postmaster-General Bissell returns to
Washington. He will not take charge of
the postoflice before Nov. 1. It is prob
able that he will stay in the post office
the last week in October in order to learn
the routine of business. He will make no
changes in the office for the present. John
Hogan will continue as first assistant
postmaster. Capt. T. ,T. Fuller has made
a good postmaster. He will, upon vacating
the office, probably return to his home at
Eiackshear.
Mr. McNeil has received many compli
ments from the papers throughout South
Georgia on his appointment. He has sold
his grocery business to Mr. Humphrey
and will devote his entire time to his new
position. The increase in the business
of the postoflice since 1888 has been great.
The office pays about fa,200 a year besides
office clerks and help. The increase in
the mail matter handled this year, as
compared with last year, has been proba
bly 25 per cent. There is an enormous
amount of work to be done for a place of
this size. It is evident that another
clerk will be necessary to facilitate the
work. At present, the time consumed
in distributing the mail after its arrival
Is entirely too long. The business men
are compelled to wait to get their mail
longer than should be necessary. The
people have not demanded a free delivery
system over the city yet, but they would
appreciate a quick distribution of the
mails.
