Strange that we should have known so little
of this modern Atlantic, this beautiful isle set
in a silver sea! Stranger still that they should
have worked out so perfect and yet so grotes

ly finished off Here we have two kings; one
spiritual, who can trace up his lineage for twen
ty-five hundred years; the other secular, who
commands the forces, both dwelling in the same
city like brothers. The Japanese seem to bo
the most impressible nation on earth; whatever
they sec they imitate, telescopes, aneroids,
steam-engines, spy-glasses, Ac.—and yet they
'lithcrto locked themselves up within an
ipcnctrablo barrier.
They have, however, one curious iastitution
which prevails to a slight degree among our
selves. It is what they call “Nnybocn,” or
“make believe. It is as if a man disbelieves the
evidence of his senses, and acts accordingly. If
a man dies in debt lie is supposed to he alive,
and his family draws his income regularly to
>ay his creditors. If a man commit suicide on
wing insulted, he is not coasidered to be dead
Mr. Whitney, though a pleasant man out of
doors, lins not always been so in his own home.
It is testified that on one occasion, when spoken
to about getting some molasses by his wife, be
threw tho jug across the room and smashed it
On another occasion, his wife said that a large
piece of salt pork which ho brought home wts
tainted; he wished her to smell it holding it out
to her, hut she said she had already done so,
and after some words, she was knocked down
with the pork, and the article nibbed on her
nose and free. And in conclusion of a list of
incidents it was testified that he drove his wife
out of his house two years ago, saying he could
not live with her. Since that time the wife
and children have been living in Malden. The
daughters are employed by a firm in the city,
and the son is in the Boston Post-Office. There
are a number of witnesses waiting for the de
