saw one of the. medium sized animals trot off
very nimbly with five persons in the saddle.—
" e learn that Mr. Machado will retain these an

to some planters, in order to try the experi
ment of their fitness for the use of our culture.”
The reports of all the officers wWo liave been
entrusted with the care ami employment of
camels for working purposes, concur in the
most emphatic testimonials to their great value;
and the Secretary of War, in his last message,
recommends tho purchase of a large number for
the use of the army. To induce their adoption
as domestic and fanning animals is, therefore,
the present desire and aim of the enterprising
gentleman who has brought the fine lot of ani

The European Crisis.
_ England too—ns well ns the Continental na
tions—is ‘‘arming” on a most extensive scale.
The I-ondon correspondent of the New York
Commercial says:
“The dock yards are activo night and day,
artillery is being dispatched to all onr homo
stations, the fortifications of the coast aro care
fully strengthened, and troops and guns have
been sent to the Channel Islands. In tho
House of Commons, the First Lord of the Ad
miralty has stated that he could not permit
Sir Uichanl Dundas to retire, as lie had wish
ed, from the Admiralty Board information
having reached him within the past few days
to render it most undesirable that the country
should lose for a moment tho naval experience
of that officer. In the House of Peers, Lord
Ellenborough last night uttered a wish that wo
had 10,000 of out courageous Indian troops at
home, in order to support our plenipotentiary
at the coming Congress.

Female Heroism—One of the most affecting
incidents of this entire tragedy occurred in the
conduct of Miss Kennedy,* cousin of Mr. Glime,
the chief clerk, and one of the owners of the
boat She was thrown by the explosion from
her state-room into the river, and floated down
tolhe stem of the boat, when she caught her
hand in one of the rings attached to the hull,
and hung in this perilous dilemma, when death
stood threatening upon cither hand. To loose
her hold was to sink into tho waves, aml_ to
hold on was to burn with the wreck to which
she was clinging—every moment being an age
of alternating hope and despair. She remained
in this position until the flames actually burn
ed the hair and skin from her head, the only
part of her body ahova water, except the liand
by which she clung to tlie wreck, and that was
burned to a crisp. While in this awful suspense,
and suffering intensely from the heat, such was
her presence of mind and wonderful heroism
that, as a man, who was worse stunned perliaps
than herself by tlie explosion, was floating by
her in a drowning condition, she seized him by
the hair with her disengaged liand and held his
face out of the water until a skiff was brought to
the rescue of both.

jfcTlie other day we saw several Irish laliorers
trying to decipher a notice headed ‘public sale.’
The notice, although written tolerable plain,
could not be read l>y the Eineralders, and they
requested us to read it for them, which of course
we did. At the conclusion, one of them turned
to his comrades and remarked in a very im
pressive tone: “Well, be jaliers, Til never buy
ofa man who’s so nagardly that lie wont get his
advertisement printed ; lie chatod the printer,
and he’d ehate me." They all acquiesced in
his decision.

Lin: Aitek Death.—A singular occurrence
says the Albany Knickerbocker, of the 27th
was’discovcred in a vault attached to one of our
burial grounds, on Sunday last It was that of
a female, who was deposited therein for dead
some two months since, lieing found, on open
ing the coffin, to be lying on her side with one
hand tinder tho heail From this it was evident
that the woman was alive when placed tliere,
and awaking from the trance into which she had
fallen, endeavored to extricate herself from her
entombment. This, of course, was an impossi
bility ; the cover was not only screwed down
tightly, but the space was too contracted to al
low of even nn effort It was evident, however,
that the unfortunate woman became convinced
of tiiis fact, and concluded to die. She there
fore took the easy posture in which she waa
found, and breathed her last Tho thought that
they hail buried Iter while yet alive, set her
friends almost crazed. Tlie father and mother
of tlie deceased had just arrived from tlie old
country last week, nnd were brought to the
Tault to see their child. Hie scene is related as

DRY GOODS FOR NOTHING 1
Five Hundred per cent less than Cost
OF THE RAW MATERIAL!
T HE buying member of tbe Firm having had an
experiense of ninety-three years in tho Dry
Goods business, and finding that ffteeu visits to the
Northern and European markets each season and a
tremendous slock brought out each time, will net sup
ply the one hundroth part of bis STUPENDOUS
TRADE, has concluded to spend all his time there,
except when at home. Some faint idea of tbe easi
ness und immensity of our business may be formed
by an inspection of our invoices, which will reveal
tlie fact that the wrapping paper alone used in our
business, cost3 annually, thirty-three thousand four
hundred and twenty-nine dollars and sixteen cents.
NO HOUSE IN THE WORLD can complete with
us, for our sales amount to many billions morn than
the Rothschilds ever dreamed of. By our enter
prise and immense capital, we liave succeeded in
chartering for our delusive use, every one of the
various noted manufactories of tho old and new
world, and with the exception of a few of the com
monest Dresses, coaxed out of us by tbe Courts ot
England and France, by tbe most pathetic appeals,
for the use of Victoria and Eugenie, we are enabled
to offer thefar handsomer selections to our own cus
tomers. Our Factories are running night and day.
The sacrifice of life among our operatives has been
truly fearful, caused entirely by the superhuman ef
forts tliey were making to have our spring styles
INCREDIBLY MAGNIFICENT. But we must
supply the wants of our customers anil cannot stop
to consider human life.
Our gooda nre always perfectly fresh and new, for
if they are not seized within nn hour after they arc-
opened we immediately box them op and send them
to the AUCTION ROOMS of New York. Philadel
