Jolm Brown is tho true type of the Northern
heroic character, dear to their hearts, and bound
to live in their annals, as tho possessor of the
traits deepest imbedded i/i the Fret-soil charac- tnoon:
ter, and therefore cliicfe^t of all their saipts.
Yea, John Brown’s will be a revered name in
New England, when Daniel Webster’s shall
have become odious. • And nil the Union meet
ings and speeches and resolutions arc hut the
feeble efforts of the compartively few white men,
at the North, who yet feel that they are white
men, and arc proud of their hirllorighl! ,We
feel for them; they are noble, self-sacrificing .pa
triots, who are wasting their energies in endeav
oring to make communities whom God has
maddened, for his own wise purposes, adopt the
course of sane men. They are a superanuated
and superseded set -of people in (lie North,
whose “vocation is gone’’—wilt) have nothing
in common with the godless, ism-ridden, radi
cal generation, wliieh is rushing on, in wildest
phrenzy, to its remediless destruction, and
which is doomed, possibly, (though we liavo a
strong trust otherwise,) to take this country
witli it Wc repeat it, we are sorry for our
Union friends North, for they are as honest and
loving as they are powerless! Would that,
like thousands of their brethren already here,
they had made their homes with us, that in the
coming struggle, our God might be their God,
instead of licin^ whelmed in the seething chal
dron of impurities bubbling around them. _
But, as we intimated above, this is no 'time
for honied phrase. Our people need the naked
trnth. Full short for preparation is the lime
before us ;* and true Southern men, whether
born here orat the North, tee and acknowledge
that the time for palliatives is past “Let the
people have tho truth,” is the cry. As God is
Qur jiubro, wo believe itiallbe spoeeh of Hick
man, which wo publish to day, presents a. true
rietc, ofNortlicrn sentiment. Bo will-any in
telligent Southern man, who, baving-bccn bom
and reared North, has hail opportunities of
sounding Northern scntimcntnnd opinion. And
if it be so, is it notrwell, that our people should
know it unreservedly ? Clearly, we think so.
And if Mr. Hickmar. speaks tho truth, is it not
time wc began to manufacture arms, powder and
ball, and to drill our militia, and combine, a-
inong" tho States, for a long and bloody contest!-
Most assuredly! * *. ; .
Read tfic spccch--it is Northern sentiment
franklyand manfully spoken by A bitter ene
