is a young man, fluent and graceful as a speak
er, and, though not possessing a skin of the
.“deepest dye,’’ hears unmistakable indications
of his race. Tho Fugitivo Slave Law of 1850
was sternly denounced, and many illustrations
were given of the cruelty and inhumanity of its
operations. Practically, a man of color could
not now enjoy liberty in any of the States of
tho Union; and, at tlic passing of t^cact, nuny
who had been living in tho free States for many
years, and had amassed a. comfortable compe
tence, were obliged to give up everything they
possessed, and escape to Canada. The friends
of. freedom were frequently met with the taunt
that in the slave States thcslaves were perfectly
contented, and had no desire to throw offa yoke
which was no burden; hut a reference to facts
would expose this fallacy. The number of fu
gitive slaves in Upper .Canada at the present
time was 45,000, and they had been reaching,
that part of tho British possessions, since the
enactment of the Fugitive Slave Law;at the rate
of between 1100 and 1200 annually. Having
made many statements to show that tho moral
and intellectual condition of this unfortunate
race was such as to enlist tho active sympathies
of the people of this country, Mr. Troy remark
ed that he had been stationed four yean- at
Windsor, tho terminus of the Great Western
Railway, at which point it was found the most
slaves arrived in their flight from the Soutbrm
States.* His circuit included eight or ten differ
ent stations, with a population of 15,000 esca
ped slaves; and lie was now seeking for pecunia
ry assistance to complete a commodious chapel
and schoolroom which had already been com
menced. On the motion of Rev. Dr. M’Kerrow,
seconded by Rev. A. Thompson, a resolution
expressing sympathy with the object, and con-,
fldenco in Mr. Troy, was carried by acclama
tion. Mr. George Thompson afterwards ad
dressed the meeting and a collection' was made
in furtherance of Mr. Troy’s project
