ing home from Washington, gives the follow
ing description of tlie fashions and apperranco
of American ladies. In our opinion, the writer
lias heen rather a elote observer of the fair sex,
and if a married man, his lieltcr-halfshould pro
cure his immediate recall from the great Ty
coon:
“We find it very difficult to comply with tlie
demands of our sovereign, forbidding us to
touch, the women of this country'. Not from
any disposition on our part to disobey,’but from
their desire to seize us by our Lands. They arc
apparently allowed hero the greatest freedom,
but it is only in appearance. Every woman,
married or single, is fastened in a cage or bam
boo, or flexible steel, extending from the waist
to thc Feet. This seems to he so arranged as to
give them no unoasiness, but they aro much
ashamed of it, and conceal it under so many
coverings that it renders their appearance quite
ludicrous. They are unrestricted as to the up
per part of their persons, which they aro per
mitted to exposa as much as they wish. This
they seem to avail themselves of'and on all oc
casions of high ceremony wear Terv low dress
es. -As in all barbarous nations, they slit their
cars and suspend from them ornaments of gold
and silver. They also paint and powder them
selves, and after greasing their hair, twist it in
to fantastic shapes and fasten it with long pins
and combs. Some of them would be fine' look
ing, if they did not disfigure themselves by the
hideous and vulgar custom of wearing eye
brows and keeping their teetli white. Be as
sured, therefore, wo.are in no danger of bciug
captivated by their appearance; we feel noth
ing but regret that the barbarous and absurd
customs of man should thus destroy thc charms'
which cultivation and refinement would so
much improve." -,. -

KING COTTON.
We thus see, by the foregoing tables, that
the whole value ot tho cotton crops in three
years have amounted to the enormous sura of
$502,300,000, about $151,200,000 of which
am rant was taken by foreign countries, and
8100,000,000 consumed at home. * .
While the exports of cotton alone in tho past
thre# years have reached $451,200,000, all oth- ,
cr products combined, including the slave grown j
articles of rice, tobacco, naval stores, together •'
with specie, Ac., have only amounted to $504,- '
000,000. Or by adding the slave products al
luded to, tlie amount would largely exceed all
other articles combined.
The exports of1850—00, we have estimated in
the above calculation to be the same in amount
as they were in 1858-59, or at $335,896,385.
A Ye have thus seen that that great staple bps
increased in sixty years from 40,000 bales, of the
value of $3,000,000* to 4,000,000 in I860, of thc I
enormous value of$223,000,000.

That larger numbers of people, everywhere, de
rive their support from Cotton, than from any other
commercial commodity, ia a ttelf-eyideut fact, and
therefore requires no argument for its elucidation.
Believing that very tnanv of theso people are use-
leas in the transaction of Planter’s business, tbe
Convention is employed in devising means to re
duce their number, as well ns to reduce the unrea
sonable charges of those whose services are neces
sary-. It is both unreasonable and unjust that the
Planters should be required to share, with so many,
the l'rnits of his capital, skill and industry. Now it
ia obvinns that if tho Planters can shake off a por
tion of these useless agents, who have fastened and
fattened on his sustenance, the amount pa'd to them
will be reserved to himself, and to that extent be
will be benefitted, for “money saved is money
made." k
Another meana of promoting the interests ot
Planters ia by establishing Direct Trade with
foreign countries; this will be done, first by pur
chasing from the mannfactnrer, and secondly by
selling directly to tbe manufacturer; thns in tho
first place, tlie goods will be purchased cheaper, and

SCARCITY OF CORN AND FOPDER.
Tlie Kufaula Express complains that hay is
worth ^3,50 per liundred in that market and
only one small lot left, at that price. That pa
per adds;
Every day we see wagon load after wagon
load of corn hauled from thc river warehouses,
by planters, and as Is sure to be thc case, the
poor mules that draw it look as though they
never get a grain of it It is a true saying that
“stock never gets fat on bought com"—and if
prool were wanting, it is only necessary to come
here and see the tnulcs that haul away the com
and liay that is sold so dear. This is tvhat comes
of running in debt for negroes aud mules to
make cotton, and neglecting to plnnt com
enough; and what is worse, these corn buyers,
or a majority of them, borrow money at large
interest to buy corn with. Yes, we have heard
of planters who had to go to the bank or brok
er’s office and get their notes discounted nt ruin
ous rates—and pledge their coming crop as se
curity, to get money to feed their negroes nnd
mules. This is indeed a deplorable state of
tilings, and nothing but ruin can come of it in
titc end.
A GREAT BORE.
Wfi have been “Aomf" some in our day—ed
itors arc apt to bo bored—and wo have read of
some “hia bore*," but about the biggest "bore’’
we havo lately rend of is the "boro” of a cannon I
juat “bored” at Pittsburg, Pa., under the di
rection of Capt T. J. Rodman, U. S. Army.
Tho “bore" of this gun is fifteen indies in <li
ameter nnd thirteen feet nine inches deep. It
will hold about sixteen bushels by measure,
and an ordinary sized man may enter it and
pass down to the bottom. It required about
three months time to "bore” this hole i^ solid
iron, and the gun revolved P.5,080 times in the
lathe. Tlie surface of the largest circumference
moved a distance of ono rod at each turn, or
over 200 miles whilst being finished. It weighed
when swung into the lathe about 57,000pounds,
nnd when finished it- exact weight was 4'.',0U9

Messrs, Ayers, IVtuyfield 4* Co.:
Dsar Sirs—Yours of the 13th inst., has keen re
ceived, its contents noted, &c. In reply to your en
quiry in regard to the Reese’s Manipulated Guano
as a fertilizer—I am well pleased so far as I have
tested its use. I applied abouflOO lbs. per acre on
land that was badly worn, and not of the best when
fresh. The product of tho field where tho Guano
was applied is over 800 lbs. of seed cotton per acre.
The same kind of land without the Guano produced
about 400 lbs. per acre. My mode of applying tho
Guano was by depositing it in the drill before bed
ding up the land, I have not tried its Use on corn,
but have no doubt but it will succeed well. I shall
use it pretty extensively on my next crop.
Yours Respectfully,
(Signed] REUBEN WRIGHT.
