THE PRESIDENT AXI) MR. DOUGLAS.
Tlie following letter from President Buchan-
.ii lias been handed to us for publication. It
I.-, written in reply to one from Governor Smith,
cal jin.: the attention of Mr. Buchanan to a re
in. ”k made by Mr. Douglas la his speech at
t'orv «•: ' The remark it-vlf Is quoted by Mr.
Buchanan in the letter below, thu~ rendering
ut.iKu -ary any preliminary statement or ex
planation. tVe will add that, while much re
gretting that there should be occasion for such
a hiti r. we arc glad to give it to the public as
evidencing a spirit worthy of a President, and
a cotirse of conduct whicli will address itself to
th.c general sympathies of the people.
Washington, August 11.
Mv Deak Sin:—I have received your favor
oi the 8th- inst. enclosing a printed extract
ft n the recent speech of Judge Douglas at
Concord. You inform me you expect to bo at
the Charlottesville Convention, and "would be
glad to know something of the interview re
ferred to” in that speech. According to this
- *w!i!irnnp-jncTge sratcsr
"The President told tne if I did not obey him
and vote to force the Lecompton constitution
npoo- the people against their will, he would
• tko off tlie bead of every friend I had in office.?
it i- unnecessary lo quote the alleged reply
of the Judge.
Surely there must ltave been some mistake in
the report of the speech, because I never held
. any such conversation with Judge Douglas, nor
any conversation whatever affording the least
color or pretext fbr such a statement. It was
Dot in my nature to address such threatening
and insulting language to any gentleman. Be
sides, i have not removed one in ton of his
. friends, and not one of his relatives. Even
among those of his friends who nave tendered
themselves prominently hostile to the measures
of tho Admistration a majority stiil remain in
office.
1 might ndd that I have never held a politi
cal conversation with Judgu Douglas on this
or any other subject since the day my first
Annual Message of the Sth December, 1837,
was read in the Senate; and I did not transmit
rite Kansas constitution to Congress until the
tid February, 183s tho question of slavery not
having been decided by a vote of the people
until Slat December, 1857.
Now, my dear sir, in writing ihu- to you I
ltave transgressed a rule which I had prescrib
ed for myself, not to contradict any statements
r.ssailtnguiy public conduct and character un
til! after the conclusion of m3- term of office.—
A statement, however, comes with such force
from a senator of the United States, who is one
of. my constitutional advisers, and this, too, in
4 published speech delivered In- hint in bis
canvass lor the highest elective office in tlie
world, that I deem the present case a proper
exception. Yours, very respectfully,
Jahc* Buchanan.

A FISH STORY.
Mkwm. Euitoks:—In vour issue of tho 20th
inst 1 noticed an article headed "A Drove of
Porpoises,” in which I was much interested,
and reminded of a somewhat similar scene I
some vears since witnessed at Long Branch
N. J. -
-l-wm>jKith lin family spending a few weeks
ut that duiiglurui Mnnnrcr-rrw*,-
bright morning was seated in one of the arbors
upon the bluff, intent upon old Sol, who had
jn-t begun to emerge from his watery bud, and
to tinge with his golden beauts the crests of
the breakers as they- came rolling siotvlj- in
upon the white beach. I had not gazed upon
this one of nature’s most beautiful pictures
f long, when my attention was called to another,
1 which, if not so sublime, was none the less cx-
, citing. Tlie raj's of the sun striking horizon-
\tally ujwn the breakers made them almost
transparent, and l observed darting along tho
cone of the outer well large numbers of tho
"blue-flali t” while nil within nearer the shore
was a countless school of “moss-1 rankers,”
. crilkaoning the water with their bload, as their
relentless pursuers (thus hemming them in)
feasted upon them at will. At inst, ns thcene-
tnj-closed upon them, apparentlt'driven to des
peration, they innde for the shore, and the
wtuhe school was landed high and dry upon
the sands—thus escaping a more cruel death at
tlm jaw - of their voracious hunters.
•Some idea may be formed of their numbers
.front the fact that the beach was thickly cover
ed with them from "Green's Hotel' to tho "Old
l r/l«fh-Jit>nee” a distance of some two and one-
'Jialrtathwe miles! 11 The blueflsh, thus partly
; ‘cheated oi their prey,' lingered in the surf, and
wptvtaken bj' trolling in great numbers, aflord-
injr r fine-morning’s sp< rt to the visitors at the
various hotels', as well as furnishing material

Messrs. Ayers, Wtugheld i$- Co.:
Dear Sirs—Y’oursof the X3th inst., has been re
ceived, its contents noted, 4o. In reply to your en
quiry in regard to the Reese's Manipulated Guano
as a fertilizer—I am well pleased so far as I have
tested its use. I applied about 100 lbs. per acre on
laud that was badly worn, and not of the best when
fresh. The product of the field where the Guano
was applied is over 800 lbs. of seed cotton per acre.
The same kind of land without the Guano produced
about 400 lbs. per acre. My mode of applying the
Guano was by depositing it in the drill before bed
ding np the land, I have not tried its nse on corn,
but have no doubt but it will succeed well. I shall
use it pretty extensively on my next crop.
Yours Respoctfu’ly,
ISigued] REUBEN WRIGHT.

Db.au sirs—The Manipulated Guano bought of
you last Spring (Reese’s, I think it was,) I approve
of \ cry much. At this time, as the crop is not ga
thered in, I cannot say ns to what per cent, it will
pay, though the use of it on poor land pays a con
siderable per cent. I shall continue the use of it.
