NEW YORK, Feb. 20.—Cotton opened steady
at a decline of 1 point on March, but generally
1 to 3 points higher on better cables tnau
looked for, claims of more demand from ex-
lJorters and southern mills, foreign buying and
covering. Active months sold about 4 to 7
points net higher shortly nfter the call, but
offerings increased on the advance and the
market during the middle of tne morning be
came week and unsettled under a renewwal of
yesterday's selling movement. Prices showed
net losses of from 3 to S points before the end
o ftbo first hour.
After the break to 11.85 for May or about
8 points under yesterday’s closing, trading be
came lesR active while prices rallied 4 or 5
points from the lowest on covering by recent
sellers who appeared to be talking profits. The
noon market was met unchanged to 3 points
higher.
Aside from short covering there appeared
little demand on the noon rally. Prices broke
again under continued Wall street pressure and
rumors of less favorable spot advices. The
market was about 5 to 8 points net lower dur
ing the early afternoon.

NEW ORLEANS COTTON.
NEW ORLEANS, Feb. 20.—The cotton fu
ture market opened steady at an advance of
1 to 3 points on somewhat higher Liverpool
market than expected and bullish private dis
patches by cable. Wet weather over a large
portion of the belt and promise of more to
come also stimulated buying. With the mar
ket showing a tendency to advance shorts in
creased their offerings but they were well
received and at the end of the first half hour
of business the trading months were 7 to 8
points over yesterday’s close.
On the rise selling orders Increased and final
ly a general selling was developed. But for the
profit taking of sellers of the early part of the
week the market would have had next to no
support. Commission houses received good buy
ing orders from realizing shorts with the old
crop months nearing the 12 cent level and the
market was checked with the May option stand
ing at 12.04. At the lowest the trading months
were 1 to 6 points under yesterday’s close.
Much bearish gossip concerning new crop prep
arations was circulated during the morning. At
noon the market was quiet but steady with
prices unchanged to 2 points down, compared
with the last quotations o' yesterday.

Cattle receipts normal, market active, prices
steady and stronger. Choice heavy steers are
scarce and in good demand. A good supply
of light fed steers from nearby feed lots were
among each day’s receipt.
Thomaston, Ga., sent in two loads of good
mixed cattle. One load was fed by E. T. Not
tingham, and the other by J. I*. C. Barrow.
While both of these loads were light and mixed,
the cattle showed marks of care and attention
on the part of the feeders and both cars were
sold to an Atlanta packer. W. R. Terry, of
iShell-man, was on the market last week with
four cars of fed steers. These were light
Georgia and Alabama steer! which Mr. Terry
put on feed in October and were a nice bunch
when shown in the yards. These were also
bought by the Atlanta packer. Several loads
of feed lot steers are reported for tbe latter
part of the week. In the face of the present
active demand, prices will doubtless continue
to be maintained.
Good killing cows are scarce. Prices are
stronger for the better weights. Medium and
light weights unchanged.
Hogs slightly higher with a moderate supply.
